An Insightful Picture of Multi-Particle Recombination in Few-Layer MoS2 Nanosheets

Pravrati Taank et al.

Summary: This study investigates the carrier recombination mechanism in photoexcited MoS2 nanosheets by using transient absorption spectroscopy. The results show that free carriers have a much slower recombination rate compared to excitons, while excitons generated from near quasi-particle excitation have a faster recombination time associated with defect capture.

Broadband Optical Phase Modulation by Colloidal CdSe Quantum Wells

Ivo Tanghe et al.

Summary: The refractive index change of 2D semiconductors is crucial for realizing various photonic devices. By utilizing femtosecond interferometry and effective medium algorithm, the time-dependent refractive index of colloidal 2D materials can be measured and calculated, showing significant phase modulation due to excitonic features.

Disentangling Many-Body Effects in the Coherent Optical Response of 2D Semiconductors

Chiara Trovatello et al.

Summary: In this study, transient optical response of single-layer WS2 was measured using ultrashort laser pulses, and the effects of many-body interactions and Coulomb correlations on excitonic resonances were analyzed. It was found that resonant photoexcitation caused a blue shift of the A exciton, while above resonance photoexcitation resulted in a reduction of the exciton oscillator strength dominating the transient response at the optical bandgap.

Exciton Dynamics in MoS2-Pentacene and WSe2-Pentacene Heterojunctions

Pavel A. Markeev et al.

Summary: We measured exciton dynamics in van der Waals heterojunctions of TMDCs and OSs. The results showed slower hole transfer rates in A-exciton decay in MoS2-pentacene heterojunctions compared to previously reported results. However, faster hole transfer rates were observed in B-exciton decay in WSe2-pentacene heterojunctions. Our work provides important insights into excitonic dynamics in TMDC-OS heterojunctions.

Zero-Threshold Optical Gain in Electrochemically Doped Nanoplatelets and the Physics Behind It

Jaco J. Geuchies et al.

Summary: Researchers have studied the photophysics and gain properties of CdSe/CdS/ZnS core-shell-shell NPLs and found that these doped NPLs are the best performing colloidal nanomaterial gain medium reported to date, with the lowest gain threshold and broadest gain spectrum. Core-shell NPLs are at the border between quantum dots and 2D materials, with lower exciton binding energy and relatively small lateral size.

Unraveling the Photophysics of Liquid-Phase Exfoliated Two-Dimensional ReS2 Nanoflakes

Pieter Schiettecatte et al.

Summary: In this study, the nature and dynamics of charge carriers in highly crystalline liquid-phase exfoliated ReS2 were analyzed using a unique combination of experimental techniques. Two distinct time regimes were identified, both dominated by unbound charge carriers despite a high exciton binding energy. The results indicate the potential of ReS2 to produce mobile free charge carriers, which is relevant for photovoltaic applications.

Generating Triplets in Organic Semiconductor Tetracene upon Photoexcitation of Transition Metal Dichalcogenide ReS2

Sourav Maiti et al.

Summary: The study found that in a bilayer of ReS2 and tetracene, the transfer of photoexcited states from ReS2 to triplet states in tetracene occurred within 5 ps with an efficiency near 38%. This opens up new possibilities for heterostructure design of two-dimensional materials with suitable organics to produce long-lived triplets. Triplets have potential applications in optoelectronics, photovoltaics, photocatalysis, and photon upconversion.

Determination of Dielectric Functions and Exciton Oscillator Strength of Two-Dimensional Hybrid Perovskites

Baokun Song et al.

Summary: Through spectroscopic ellipsometry, we studied the optical properties of 2D HOIPs at different thicknesses, identified a series of feature peaks in the dielectric functions, and explained the evolution of the ground-state exciton peak with unit-cell thickness and excitonic confinement. We observed extraordinary values of optical extinction and electric loss tangents at the primary excitonic resonances and provided a detailed comparison with other known excitonic materials.

Quantitative Electrochemical Control over Optical Gain in Quantum-Dot Solids

Jaco J. Geuchies et al.

Summary: Research demonstrates that by electrochemically doping films of CdSe/CdS/ZnS QDs, quantitative control over the gain threshold can be achieved, opening up a new route for the creation of cheap, solution-processable, low-threshold QD lasers.
