Visualizing surface-enriched Li storage with a nanopore-array model battery

Shiwen Li et al.

Summary: The coupling of model batteries and surface-sensitive techniques provides a platform for studying crucial surface/interface processes in battery systems. Here, a sandwich-format nanopore-array model battery with an ultrathin graphite electrode and an anodized aluminum oxide film was reported. This model battery allows repetitive charge-discharge processes and in-situ characterizations of ion intercalation in the graphite electrode.

Summary: This study proposes a strategy of switching electrolytes to tune the properties of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), resulting in lithium-ion batteries with higher rate capabilities and wider temperature ranges. A molecular interfacial model is used to explain the differences in SEI formation between ether-based and carbonate-based electrolytes, providing insights into the obtained higher rate performances.

In Situ Visualization of Atmosphere-Dependent Relaxation and Failure in Energy Storage Electrodes

Chao Wang et al.

Summary: The ambient atmosphere plays a critical role in the surface/interface chemistry of electrodes in energy storage devices. Relaxation effects can be observed in anhydrous inert atmospheres and O-2, while rapid and unrecoverable failure behaviors occur in hydrous atmospheres. The exposure to water can lead to nearly 100% capacity loss, highlighting the importance of understanding electrode behavior under different atmospheres.

Operando Measurement of Layer Breathing Modes in Lithiated Graphite

Hossein Yadegari et al.

Summary: The study reports direct detection and dissociation of specific crystallographic phases in lithiated graphite, confirming the impact of local strain on the graphite lattice during lithium intercalation/deintercalation process. The findings reveal new graphene-like characteristics in lithiated graphite under deep charged condition due to the induced strain by inserted lithium. Additionally, the study provides a simple experimental tool to measure induced strain in the graphite structure under full intercalation conditions.

LiPO2F2 electrolyte additive for high-performance Li-rich cathode material

Bing Jiang et al.

Summary: Li-rich layered oxide cathodes have high operating potential and specific capacity, but suffer from structural instability and parasitic reactions at high potential. By adding LiPO2F2 electrolyte additive, the cycling stability of the Li1.14Ni0.133Co0.133Mn0.544O2 cathode is improved, leading to enhanced interfacial stability and mitigated interfacial side reactions. This study provides new insights for enhancing high-potential Li-rich layered oxide batteries.
