Measuring Research Mentors' Cultural Diversity Awareness for Race/Ethnicity in STEM: Validity Evidence for a New Scale

Angela Byars-Winston et al.

Summary: Research shows that enhancing research mentors' cultural diversity awareness can improve mentoring effectiveness, especially for underrepresented racial/ethnic minority groups in STEM fields. An assessment scale was developed to measure cultural diversity awareness related to race/ethnicity in research mentoring relationships, validated through various methods including qualitative data, cognitive interviews, and national item testing with mentors and mentees. The scale includes factors assessing attitudes, behavior, and confidence for mentors, and attitudes and behavior for mentees, aiming to evaluate the alignment between mentors and mentees' cultural diversity awareness scores.
