Distributed monitoring of rail lateral buckling under axial loading

Fuzheng Sun et al.

Summary: Distributed fiber optic sensors were used for the first time to monitor lateral buckling of a rail under axial loading with different boundary conditions. Two types of DFOS systems were compared for their performance, and a data extrapolation method was developed to evaluate actual boundary conditions. Rail deflection along the length of rail was calculated by integrating distributed curvature data and compared with deflection measured by linear potentiometers.

Measuring support reactions and damage detection in steel beams using distributed strain sensing

Jack Gillham et al.

Summary: This study utilizes distributed fiber optic sensors (DFOS) measurements to derive support reactions and detect local damage on flexural members of a bridge. Through a series of load tests, it is demonstrated that DFOS measurements play a crucial role in assessing bridge performance and adjustments for geometry variations can be made through calibration.

Development of an Axial Strain Measurement System for Rails

Christian Barker et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the ability of two FOS systems (based on Rayleigh and Brillouin backscatter) to measure axial strain in rails under various conditions. Three alternative fiber types were tested for ruggedness and installation effort, with thermal correction factors developed for each analyzer/fiber combination. The application of this monitoring system in Ottawa, Canada was explored using both systems on a CWR track.
