EffectorP 3.0: Prediction of Apoplastic and Cytoplasmic Effectors in Fungi and Oomycetes

Jana Sperschneider et al.

Summary: Many fungi and oomycete pathogens secrete effector proteins to facilitate plant infection. A classifier (EffectorP 3.0) has been developed to accurately predict effector proteins in fungal and oomycete secretomes with low false-positive rates.

Protein pI and Intracellular Localization

Alexander A. Tokmakov et al.

Summary: The protein isoelectric point (pI) can be calculated computationally from an amino acid sequence, and studies have shown that protein pI distributions are multimodal in different species, possibly due to differences in local pI distributions related to subcellular localization specificity.

Computational Structural Genomics Unravels Common Folds and Novel Families in the Secretome of Fungal Phytopathogen Magnaporthe oryzae

Kyungyong Seong et al.

Summary: Structural biology has the potential to illuminate the evolution of pathogen effectors and their commonalities, with recent breakthroughs in protein structure modeling enabling genome-wide computational approaches. In this study, structure prediction methods were applied to the secretome of the fungal pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae, revealing new members of structurally similar effectors and effector families. Additionally, the evolution of putative ADP-ribose transferases with predicted structures was investigated, suggesting new evolutionary trajectories for specialized protein binders.
