Serpentinite as a tracer for tectonic setting and mantle metasomatism of ophiolites: A case study of the Aoyougou ophiolite in the Qilian Orogenic Belt, NW China

Jing Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the problematic Aoyougou serpentinites in the Qilian Orogenic Belt, NW China. The results suggest that the protoliths of these serpentinites are melting residues of oceanic lithospheric mantle in a forearc setting. Petrographic observations, mineral chemistry, geochemistry, and Re-Os isotopic compositions indicate multiple episodes of partial melting and melt/fluid metasomatism, potentially triggered by slab-derived melts/fluids. The study also proposes an intra-oceanic subduction model to interpret the origin and evolution of the ophiolite.

Mineral chemistry and geochemistry of serpentinites from the Bianmagou ophiolite in the North Qilian Belt, NW China: Implications for protoliths, melt extractions, and melt/fluid metasomatism

Jing Zhao et al.

Summary: The study examines serpentinites from the North Qilian Belt in China to discuss their protoliths, geodynamic environment, melt extractions, and melt/fluid interactions. The results indicate that the serpentinites were refractory mantle residues from mid-ocean ridge settings, experienced high degrees of partial melting and multiple episodes of melt depletion, and were influenced by fluid interactions during serpentinization.

Episodic growth of felsic continents in the past 3.7 Ga

Marion Garcon

Summary: Continents form the most accessible parts of Earth, but their complex compositions make their origin difficult to investigate. A novel approach based on a comprehensive compilation of samarium-neodymium isotopic compositions of detrital sedimentary rocks is here used to unravel continental growth through time. This record reveals that continents were as felsic as today in the past 3.7 Ga (billion years) and that their growth was not continuous but episodic. Reworking of preexisting crust was a ubiquitous process during most of Earth history, but at least six periods of continental growth can be identified every 500 to 700 Ma (million years) in the past 3.7 Ga. This recurrence could be accounted for by changes in tectonic plate velocities favoring periods of rapid subduction and enhanced production of juvenile felsic crust.
