In Situ Foam 3D Printing of Microcellular Structures Using Material Extrusion Additive Manufacturing

Karun Kalia et al.

Summary: A facile manufacturing method for in situ foam 3D printing of thermoplastic materials is reported. By incorporating thermally expandable microspheres (TEMs) into the filament, the researchers achieved the in situ foaming during printing, resulting in highly uniform cellular structures. The study also found that the addition of TEM and plasticizer did not significantly affect the critical temperatures of the material, but the foaming process greatly improved its ductility and toughness.

Novel method to control explosive shock sensitivity: A mesoscale study to understand the effect of thermally expandable microsphere (TEM) inclusions in high explosives (HE) microstructure

Nirmal K. Rai et al.

Summary: When the void content and structure of a high explosive (HE) are altered, the shock initiation behavior of the material changes. This study investigates the use of thermally expandable microspheres (TEMs) as a dopant in a polymer bonded explosive (PBX) matrix to control the shock initiation properties. The results show that the expanded TEMs cause a secondary shock wave, increasing the overall shock sensitivity.

Study on preparation and process of poly(MMA-St) thermally expandablecore-shellmicrospheres

Sheng-cai Tian et al.

Summary: Thermally expandable microspheres were synthesized by suspension polymerization of MMA and St in the presence of paraffin blowing agents. The study showed that AIBN could initiate water phase polymerization and facilitate the formation of core-shell microspheres, while LPO could not initiate water phase polymerization, resulting in an intermediate porous state. When the boiling point of the blowing agent was lower than the polymerization temperature, the microspheres had a porous structure.

Geometrical and mechanical characterisation of hollow thermoplastic microspheres for syntactic foam applications

Matthew E. Curd et al.

Summary: The study characterizes two classes of thermoplastic microspheres using X-ray computed tomography, focused ion beam and electron microscopy, revealing the spatial distribution of the microspheres within a polyurethane-matrix syntactic foam and their mechanical properties. They find that the volume-weighted polydisperse shell diameters follow a normal distribution, while there is no correlation between shell wall thickness and shell diameter. By analyzing the data, they estimate the Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of the microsphere shell material for potential future improvements in material design and fabrication.

Foaming performance and bonding strength of a novel urea-formaldehyde foaming resin facilely prepared with thermo-expandable microspheres

La Hu et al.

Summary: The novel urea-formaldehyde foaming resin showed good expansion performance and a uniform cellular structure, but the addition of thermo-expandable microspheres resulted in decreased shear strength. The introduction of glutaraldehyde improved bonding strength but increased apparent density significantly. Increasing the concentration of TEMs can reduce the apparent density of the UF foaming resins, but at the expense of strength. Glutaraldehyde may be a promising chemical modifier for improving bonding strength of TEMs/UF resins.

Investigation of the damping properties of polylactic acid-based syntactic foam structures

Katalin Litauszki et al.

Summary: This study focused on creating environmentally-friendly, compostable polymer foams using bio-based polylactic acid (PLA). By investigating the temperature-dependent mechanical properties of the foamed samples and extending their properties using the time-temperature superposition principle, the potential field of application of the foams was broadened. The damping properties of the foams were found to increase with the content of thermally expandable microspheres, and the blends of PLA/PBAT showed different tendencies in their damping ability depending on the ratio of PBAT to PLA.
