2D-patterned graphene metasurfaces for efficient third harmonic generation at THz frequencies

Anna Theodosi et al.

Summary: Graphene is a promising material for nonlinear applications in the THz regime due to its high third order nonlinearity and ability to support surface plasmons. In this study, 2D-patterned graphene-patch metasurfaces are investigated for efficient third harmonic generation. The efficiency is enhanced by aligning the fundamental and third harmonic frequencies with the metasurface resonances, achieved through 2D-patterning that modifies the dispersion of plasmons. High efficiencies of -20dB (1%) for input intensity 0.1 MW/cm(2) are achieved, and the results demonstrate the potential of graphene-based metasurfaces for nonlinear applications.

Reconstructing subwavelength resolution terahertz holographic images

Ruoxing Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a multi-foci metalens model was proposed to reconstruct THz holographic images with subwavelength resolution. The model, based on dielectric metasurfaces composed of silicon micropillars with spatially variant orientations, can generate high-resolution target images on its focal plane. The experimental results demonstrate that the reconstructed images have subwavelength resolution.

Ultra-broadband perfect terahertz absorber with periodic-conductivity graphene metasurface

Baoku Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents an interesting scheme of an ultra-broadband perfect terahertz (THz) absorber using a periodic-conductivity graphene metasurface. By modulating the conductivity of graphene in a periodic manner, the absorber can generate dense high-order resonance modes and achieve ultra-broadband continuous absorption. This scheme is significant for the development of broadband THz absorbers and has promising application prospects in THz stealth, imaging, and communication fields.

Enhanced terahertz third harmonic generation with high-order guided-mode resonance of graphene plasmonic gratings

Baoku Wang et al.

Summary: We propose a unique approach for efficiently enhancing terahertz third harmonic generation (THG) using graphene plasmonic grating. By utilizing the high-order guided-mode resonance and suppressing the off-plane transverse localized field, we are able to tightly concentrate and significantly enhance the electromagnetic energy in monolayer graphene. In addition, the excitation of high-density in-plane hot spots creates a quasi-continuous enhanced-field profile called hot surface, which greatly enhances the nonlinearity of terahertz field-graphene interaction. This breakthrough overcomes the limitations of traditional patterned metamaterials and holds promising applications in nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy, imaging, and communication.

Ultrafast Terahertz Self-Induced Absorption and Phase Modulation on a Graphene-Based Thin Film Absorber

Anastasios D. Koulouklidis et al.

Summary: In this study, a thin film graphene-based terahertz perfect absorbing device is presented, which allows modulation of absorption and phase characteristics through terahertz self-actions. The experimental results show significant absorption modulation and phase modulation when the device is illuminated with terahertz field strengths. Theoretical analysis reveals that the terahertz-induced heating of graphene's carriers is the main cause of the nonlinear response, and the ultrafast nature of the process is demonstrated.

Enhanced third-harmonic generation from layered graphene/insulator disks array

Jian-Qiang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a scheme for enhancing the efficiency of third harmonic generation in layered graphene disks array by introducing a plasmonic antibonding state is theoretically proposed. The efficiency can be significantly improved by optimizing geometry parameters and provide a way for new frequency converters and modulators in optical communication and signal processing.

Jan-Christoph Deinert et al.

Summary: Nonlinear optics plays a crucial role in optical and optoelectronic technologies. The integration of graphene with a photonic grating structure has led to a significant enhancement in the third-harmonic generation in the terahertz regime. This enhancement opens up new possibilities for chip-integrated, room-temperature, and commercially viable THz nonlinear conversion applications.

Resonance-trapped bound states in he continuum in metallic THz metasurfaces

Summary: This research demonstrates the tuning of the coupling coefficient between two metallic split-ring resonators by modeling metals as perfect electric conductors to satisfy a particular condition. Experimental observation of a BIC-induced cloaking effect linked to the dissipation loss of constitutive materials provides an alternative strategy for constructing BICs in metallic metasurfaces.
