Replicating the Cynandra opis Butterfly's Structural Color for Bioinspired Bigrating Color Filters

Xiaobao Cao et al.

Summary: This study utilizes two-photon laser lithography to fabricate bioinspired bigrating nanostructures, whose optical properties can be controlled by varying the height and period. The research achieves excellent spectral characteristics and high color purity over the entire visible range through combined effects of multilayer interference and diffraction. Such tuneable bigrating structures are of significant utility in color filtering applications.

3D-Printed Micro Lens-in-Lens for In Vivo Multimodal Microendoscopy

Jiawen Li et al.

Summary: Multimodal microendoscopes enable simultaneous structural and molecular measurements in vivo, providing valuable insights into pathological changes associated with diseases. However, different optical imaging modalities have conflicting requirements for lens design, posing a challenge for the fabrication of miniaturized imaging probes. This study demonstrates an optical design using two-photon 3D printing to create a miniaturized lens that is optimized for both fluorescence and optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging. The lens-in-lens design shows significant improvement in fluorescence sensitivity compared to conventional fiber-optic design approaches, and is successfully integrated into an intravascular catheter probe for simultaneous OCT and fluorescence imaging of a mouse artery in vivo.

Sequential metamaterials with alternating Poisson's ratios

Amin Farzaneh et al.

Summary: This study introduces periodic and graded metamaterials that passively achieve sequential deformations with user-specified alternating Poisson's ratios. An analytical approach and software tool are provided for designing these materials in two- and three-dimensions. Experiments validate the accuracy of the design in producing alternating Poisson's ratios.

Additive manufacturing of high porosity magnesium scaffolds with lattice structure and random structure

Xuezheng Yue et al.

Summary: In this study, two additive manufactured magnesium alloy structures with high porosity were designed and fabricated. The experimental results showed that both structures had continuous connections and interconnected porous architectures, with adjustable elastic modulus. The hybrid TPMS structure exhibited superior mechanical properties compared to the Voronoi structure.

Experimental and calculational investigation of laser-heated additive manufactured foams

O. S. Jones et al.

Summary: The study presents new experimental data on laser-heated additive manufacturing (AM) foams, which are suitable for inertial confinement fusion. Pure carbon foam showed less backscatter than a C8H9O3 foam of similar density, consistent with multi-fluid calculations. The level of backscattering and thermal front speeds for the AM foams were similar to values measured for stochastic (aerogel) foams under similar conditions.

Simulation studies of the interaction of laser radiation with additively manufactured foams

J. L. Milovich et al.

Summary: Research shows that 3D computer simulations incorporating a disconnected representation of foam's microstructure can better explain the interaction between laser and low-density foams. Experimental data demonstrate that using this model can replicate experimental results fairly well. Furthermore, simulations with a wave propagation code indicate that microstructures can enhance stimulated Brillouin scattering.

Mechanical properties of additively-manufactured sheet-based gyroidal stochastic cellular materials

Oraib Al-Ketan et al.

Summary: Advancements in additive manufacturing have led to investigations of atomic lattice mimicking structures and plate-based cellular materials, which have shown promising mechanical properties but exhibit anisotropic behavior. The study presents a design procedure for creating partially closed sheet-based stochastic cellular materials using implicit functions, with finite element analyses used to evaluate their mechanical properties and isotropy. Experimental results show that the stochastic cellular materials exhibit stretching-dominated deformation, but periodic Gyroid samples have superior mechanical properties.

Studies of laser-plasma interaction physics with low-density targets for direct-drive inertial confinement fusion on the Shenguang III prototype

V. T. Tikhonchuk et al.

Summary: The physics of laser-plasma interaction was studied on the Shenguang III prototype laser facility using high-energy laser beams to ionize low-density plastic foam and create a sub-millimeter-sized hot underdense plasma. Experimental results showed significant stimulated Raman scattering, indicating the importance of implementing laser temporal smoothing techniques for controlling laser propagation and absorption. The study also analyzed the results with radiation hydrodynamic simulations taking into account foam ionization and homogenization.
