Ecological performance underlying ecosystem multifunctionality is promoted by organic farming and hedgerows at the local scale but not at the landscape scale

Eloise Couthouis et al.

Summary: This study examined the multifunctionality of winter cereal fields and hedgerows, finding that hedgerows outperformed crop fields in terms of biodiversity conservation and pest control functions. Organic and conventional farming showed similar agroecosystem multifunctionality, but conventional farming had higher yields. Landscape factors like hedgerow density and semi-natural habitats had little influence on multifunctionality at the agroecosystem level.

Supporting wild pollinators in agricultural landscapes through targeted legume mixtures

Lorna J. Cole et al.

Summary: Insect-pollinated legumes are important for sustainable diets and ecosystem services, but their value to pollinators has been questioned. This study explores legume cropping systems to optimize forage availability for pollinators while delivering agronomic and environmental benefits. Densely flowering legumes support rich pollinator assemblages, and a mix of legumes with different structures and phenology can attract a wider range of pollinating insects.

Farming intensity indirectly reduces crop yield through negative effects on agrobiodiversity and key ecological functions

Remi Duflot et al.

Summary: Farming intensity and landscape heterogeneity have an influence on agrobiodiversity and ecological functions, but their contributions to cereal crop production are not clear. In 2016, farming intensity had the greatest direct positive effect on cereal crop yield, followed by agrobiodiversity and ecological functions. However, the direct benefits of farming intensity were reduced due to negative indirect effects. Agrobiodiversity and farming intensity had equal net contributions to cereal crop yields, while heterogeneity of the crop mosaic enhanced biodiversity. In 2017, neither higher farming intensity nor agrobiodiversity and ecological functions could increase cereal production.

Carabid activity-density and community composition, and their impact on seed predation in pulse crops

Stefanie E. De Heij et al.

Summary: Reduced use of chemicals in weed management is crucial for increasing agricultural sustainability. Carabid and cricket weed seed predation shows promise as an additional weed management tool, but their activity and predation levels vary across different crops and cropping systems. This study explored the activity-density, community, and seed consumption of carabids and crickets in commercial pulse crop fields. The results suggest that crop type does not affect seed predation or carabid activity-density, but it does shape the carabid + cricket community. Crop history also has a significant impact on the community and its relationship with soil temperature and weed seed predation.

Increasing landscape complexity enhances species richness of farmland arthropods, agri-environment schemes also abundance-A meta-analysis

Riho Marja et al.

Summary: Intensification of agricultural production and simplification of landscape structure have negatively affected arthropod communities. Agri-environment schemes can partially compensate for these losses and enhance arthropod populations, but their effectiveness is higher in simple landscapes. Landscape complexity determines the local arthropod species richness, while local management only affects arthropod abundance.

Indirect Effect of Pesticides on Insects and Other Arthropods

Francisco Sanchez-Bayo

Summary: Pesticides released into the environment can have indirect effects on target and non-target species through impacts on other species and ecological mechanisms, often leading to unintended consequences. These effects may include pest outbreaks, reduction in predator populations, and alterations in ecosystem structure.

Farmland heterogeneity is associated with gains in some ecosystem services but also potential trade-offs

Julie Botzas-Coluni et al.

Summary: Increasing farmland heterogeneity may be a key lever to improve non-food ecosystem services provision in agricultural landscapes, but there are varying responses of different ecosystem services to changes in heterogeneity, leading to potential trade-offs. Our study found that the effects of farmland heterogeneity on ecosystem services provision varied across spatial scales, highlighting the importance of understanding and acknowledging possible trade-offs, particularly for crop production and pest regulation services.

Organic and conservation agriculture promote ecosystem multifunctionality

Raphaeel A. Wittwer et al.

Summary: A long-term farming system experiment evaluated and compared the agronomic, economic, and ecological performance of organic, conservation, and conventional agriculture in Europe, finding that organic and conservation agriculture promote ecosystem multifunctionality by enhancing regulating and supporting services. In contrast, conventional cropping shows reduced multifunctionality but highest yield. Organic production results in higher economic performance due to higher product prices. The different cropping systems provide opposing services, highlighting the productivity-environmental protection dilemma for agroecosystem functioning.
