Honey as a Functional Food for Apis mellifera

May R. Berenbaum et al.

Summary: Nectar is consumed by a wide range of insects, but only bees and wasps in the superfamily Apoidea process and store it. Honey produced by Apis mellifera has unique properties that serve various functions like protecting bees against pathogens, toxins, and cold stress, as well as regulating development and adult longevity. The process of honey making in A. mellifera involves incorporation of exogenous material and endogenous products, indicating that honey is more than just a source of carbohydrates for bees.

Out of Africa: novel source of small hive beetles infesting Eastern and Western honey bee colonies in China

Yuanzhen Liu et al.

Summary: This study reports a case of SHB infestations in China and uses COI gene sequencing to trace their origin. DNA sequences suggest an introduction from an unidentified African source, similar to the Philippines but different from previously reported SHB haplotypes. The establishment of SHB in China underlines the importance of limiting novel introductions to protect endemic Asian honey bees.

Identification and Expression Profile of Chemosensory Genes in the Small Hive Beetle Aethina tumida

Lixian Wu et al.

Summary: The small hive beetle is a destructive pest of honeybees, lacking in chemosensory genes like odorant receptors and gustatory receptors. High expression of OBPs and CSPs in the antennae suggests potential targets for environmentally friendly pest control measures. Further research into the chemosensory genes of Aethina tumida could lead to the development of new pest control methods.
