Tunning tin-based perovskite as an electrolyte for semiconductor protonic fuel cells

Nabeela Akbar et al.

Summary: The study reports the results of tuning the perovskite BaSnO3 (BSO) as a proton-conducting electrolyte for SPFC. It is found that oxygen vacancies play a crucial role in promoting proton transport, while the electronic short-circuiting issue of BSO semiconductor is addressed by the Schottky junction mechanism at the anode/electrolyte interface. A high-performance SPFC device with high ionic conductivity and power density is demonstrated.

Perovskites for protonic ceramic fuel cells: a review

Jiafeng Cao et al.

Summary: Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) are a promising energy technology that can efficiently convert chemical energy into electric power at reduced temperature. The practical use of PCFCs relies on efficient key cell materials, such as electrolyte and electrodes, that meet various requirements. In the past two decades, researchers have extensively explored complex oxides with the ABO(3) perovskite or related structure as key materials in PCFCs due to their flexible composition and versatile properties. The material engineering of perovskite oxides for PCFCs is an important focus of research, with a particular emphasis on compositional engineering to modify the lattice structure, defect structure, and ionic transportation behavior of perovskite oxides.

Heavily Sn-doped barium cerates BaCe0.8-xSnxYb0.2O3-δ: Correlations between composition and ionic transport

Inna A. Zvonareva et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the design of proton-conducting electrolytes with high ionic conductivity and chemical stability by synthesizing Sn-substituted BaCeO3 materials. The results show that Sn-doping deteriorates the conductivity of ceramic materials but improves their stability with respect to interaction with H2O and CO2. This suggests that co-doping BaCeO3 with tin and ytterbium is a promising approach for achieving the desired balance between performance, efficiency, and long-term stability in solid oxide fuel cells.
