Fabrication of energy-saving MgO with large grain size and low thermal conductivity: Towards a new type of magnesia for high-temperature furnaces

Xinming Ren et al.

Summary: The development of advanced refractories with low thermal conductivity and long service life is crucial for optimizing energy consumption in high-temperature industries. Through the addition of Al2O3 and La2O3 as additives, a series of magnesia refractories with desirable properties have been successfully prepared.

Comparison study of slag corrosion resistance of MgO-MgAl2O4, MgO-CaO and MgO-C refractories under electromagnetic field

Xin-ming Ren et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the corrosion and penetration of MgO-based refractories were accelerated under the influence of an electromagnetic field (EMF), making the molten slag easier to penetrate into the refractories. Despite MgO-C refractories showing no significant advantage in slag resistance, as EMF hindered the formation of a dense protective layer, they are still considered the most promising slag line material among MgO-MgAl2O4, MgO-CaO, and MgO-C refractories.

Improving hydration resistance of MgO-CaO ceramics by in situ synthesized CaZrO3 coatings prepared using a non-hydrolytic sol

Tingting Xu et al.

Summary: By depositing CaZrO3 coatings on MgO-CaO ceramics, their hydration resistance was significantly improved. After calcination, most of the CaO transformed into CaZrO3 and was located at the grain boundaries, leading to enhanced performance of the ceramics.

Sintering behavior and thermal shock resistance of aluminum titanate (Al2TiO5)-toughened MgO-based ceramics

Jialiang Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that sintering at 1450°C and 1550°C for 3 hours resulted in MgO-based ceramics with enhanced thermal shock resistance when using 10wt% Al2TiO5, showing optimal relative density and bending strength. Additionally, samples with 15wt% Al2TiO5 added and sintered at 1550°C with a dwell time of 3 hours exhibited the highest residual bending strength and lowest thermal expansion coefficient. The improvement in thermal shock resistance was attributed to the reduction in thermal expansion coefficient.

Degradation mechanisms of periclase-magnesium aluminate spinel refractory bricks used in the upper transition zone of a cement rotary kiln

Wenying Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation mechanisms of dense periclase-magnesium aluminate spinel refractory bricks used in the upper transition zone of cement rotary kilns using XRD, SEM, and EDS techniques. The main causes of brick damage were found to be structural spalling, significant crack growth, deposition of alkali salts, and thermal stress.

Summary: A new strategy was proposed to improve the mechanical strength and cement clinker corrosion resistance of refractories for cement kiln by utilizing microporous magnesia aggregates to fabricate advanced lightweight periclase-magnesium aluminate spinel refractories. By substituting microporous magnesia aggregates for dense magnesia aggregates, the new refractories achieved practically the same cement clinker resistance while decreasing bulk density and increasing strength.
