Customized Structure Design and Functional Mechanism Analysis of Carbon Spheres for Advanced Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Junbao Kang et al.

Summary: This review article summarizes the recent advances of carbon spheres (CSs) in high-energy lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs), including their applications in inhibiting the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and protecting lithium anodes. The unique restriction effects of CSs on LiPSs are explained from three working mechanisms: physical confinement, chemical interaction, and catalytic conversion. The protective effect of CSs on lithium anodes is also analyzed from the perspective of interface engineering and 3D structure designing. Furthermore, future directions and prospects are discussed.

Layer-by-Layer Assembly of CeO2-x@C-rGO Nanocomposites and CNTs as a Multifunctional Separator Coating for Highly Stable Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Yulei Li et al.

Summary: The commercialization of high-energy Li-S batteries is limited by their poor cycle retention and cycling life due to lithium polysulfide shuttling. In this study, a multilayered functional CeO2-x@C-rGO/CNT separator was successfully fabricated, which can effectively hinder the diffusion of polysulfide species, accelerate the redox reactions of sulfur species, and enhance the conductivity for sulfur reactivation and efficient utilization. The Li-S battery assembled with this separator demonstrates excellent capacity, rate capability, and cycling performance, as well as reduced self-discharge and anode corrosion.

Two-dimensional square metal organic framework as promising cathode material for lithium-sulfur battery with high theoretical energy density

Dachang Chen et al.

Summary: Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are promising for high energy density storage, but face challenges related to the cathode material. This study explores a novel two-dimensional metal organic framework (MOF) as a potential cathode material, which demonstrates good anchoring performance and low volume expansion. The results suggest that this material could significantly reduce polysulfide dissolution and achieve ultra-high energy density.

An interwoven carbon nanotubes/cerium dioxide electrocatalyst accelerating the conversion kinetics of lithium sulfide toward high- performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Gongyu Wen et al.

Summary: This study addresses the drawbacks of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries by inserting a carbon nanotubes/cerium dioxide interlayer material (CNTs@CeO2) between the sulfur cathode and the separator. The CNTs@CeO2 interlayer provides a conductive network for electron transportation, facilitates the adsorption-catalytic conversion of lithium polysulfides, and promotes electrolyte penetration and lithium ion migration. The Li-S battery with the CNTs@CeO2 interlayer exhibits superior rate performance and excellent cycling stability, showing potential for high-energy-density Li-S batteries.

Electrochemical storage behavior of NiCo2O4 nanoparticles anode with structural and morphological evolution in lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries

Mobinul Islam et al.

Summary: NiCo2O4 nanoparticles with sizes of 5-10 nm were prepared using a simple sol-gel method and evaluated as the anode in Li/Na-cells. The anode exhibited excellent performance in the Li battery but poor cycle retention in the Na battery. Structural analysis revealed significant volume expansion in the Na battery, leading to irreversible challenges for the NiCo2O4 anode.

Improved lithium storage performance of sulfur loaded by CMK-3 with a tailored hierarchical pore structure

Xi Chen et al.

Summary: Porous carbon material CMK-3 M with a tailored hierarchical pore structure shows superior electrochemical performance in lithium-sulfur batteries. The larger surface area and pore size of CMK-3 M facilitate electron and Li+ ion transfer, as well as enhance interaction with sulfur. The micropores of CMK-3 M can contain smaller sulfur molecules, effectively preventing soluble polysulfide formation and suppressing the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides. Coating with polyethylene glycol further improves the performance of sulfur-loaded CMK-3 M, suggesting that polymer protection is an effective way to inhibit the polypyl sulfide shuttle.
