Innovation context and technology traits explain heterogeneity across studies of agricultural technology adoption: A meta-analysis

The US farm credit system and agricultural development: Evidence from an early expansion, 1920-1940

Summary: This study explores the impact of Production Credit Associations (PCAs), a branch of the early Farm Credit System, on agricultural yield and input use after the farm credit crisis of the 1920s in the United States. The findings show that counties within 30 km of a PCA experienced 7% to 14% higher crop revenue per acre and 9% higher corn yields compared to counties located more than 60 km away from a PCA. Additionally, there was a small but statistically significant increase in tractor usage (1% to 2%) in these areas. These results provide crucial evidence of the effectiveness of government-sponsored enterprises in addressing market frictions in the early US agricultural economy.

However, the impacts were overwhelmingly presented positively, despite the fact that technologies also bring negative consequences.

This holistic approach can provide insights for policymakers aiming to foster the diffusion of digital technologies in agriculture.
