Stable Carbon and Nitrogen Isotope Variability of Bone Collagen to Determine the Number of Isotopically Distinct Specimens

Corrie Hyland et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new metric to identify isotopically distinct specimens (NIDS) from highly fragmented faunal assemblages using stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values. The research demonstrates the potential for distinguishing individual animals and generating large samples in archaeological contexts.

Analysis of narwhal tusks reveals lifelong feeding ecology and mercury exposure

Rune Dietz et al.

Summary: The ability of animals to respond to changes in their environment is essential for their survival, and in the Arctic, climate change and mercury exposure are major environmental threats for top predators. The unique capacity of narwhal tusks to characterize chronological lifetime biogeochemical profiles reveals surprising plasticity in narwhal feeding ecology and changes in mercury exposure. The findings suggest that reduced sea-ice in the Arctic is leading to changes in migration, habitat use, food web, and contaminant exposure in Arctic top predators.

Population-specific sex and size variation in long-term foraging ecology of belugas and narwhals

Marie Louis et al.

Summary: Intraspecific variation in resource use by individuals of different sex and size may reflect differing energetic requirements and physiological constraints. Our study found that males of belugas and narwhals in Greenland have a higher trophic level and a larger ecological niche compared to females, with an increase in delta N-15 with size, particularly in males. These variations in diet are population dependent and probably the result of varying ecological interactions.

Ancient DNA reveals the lost domestication history of South American camelids in Northern Chile and across the Andes

Paloma Diaz-Maroto et al.

Summary: The study reveals the genetic diversity of ancient South American camelids through mitochondrial genomes and osteometric analysis, showing the prevalence of interbreeding practices during the domestication process, and proposing a domestication hypothesis that includes an ancient guanaco population that no longer exists.

Late Pleistocene paleoecology and phylogeography of woolly rhinoceroses

Alba Rey-Iglesia et al.

Summary: The woolly rhinoceros was a cold-adapted herbivore widely distributed during the Late Pleistocene, with ecological flexibility and geographic variation in stable isotope compositions across time. In northeastern Siberia, stable nitrogen isotope values indicate long-term environmental stability, potentially enabling the species' survival. Isotopic similarities between the woolly rhinoceros and other contemporary herbivores suggest niche partitioning, while genetic data show three overlapping haplogroups expanding during the Last Glacial Maximum, reflecting environmental stability's influence on paleoecology.
