Nitrate sources and mixing in the Danube watershed: implications for transboundary river basin monitoring and management

J. Halder et al.

Summary: Dispersed and unknown pollution sources in large transboundary watersheds complicate water management. This study applied stable isotopes and emerging contaminants to evaluate water mixing and contaminant inputs in the transboundary Danube River. The results showed that snowmelt dominated tributary mixing in the mainstem, and cold snowmelt reduced biological activity and controlled nitrate biotransformation processes. The study also demonstrated the low biodegradation potential of organic compounds transferred into the mainstem by tributaries. The use of additional tracers such as CECs improved the interpretation of hydrological processes and supported pollutant source tracing and biogeochemical process understanding.

Global patterns of nitrate isotope composition in rivers and adjacent aquifers reveal reactive nitrogen cascading

Ioannis Matiatos et al.

Summary: The isotopic data of nitrate in global rivers and shallow aquifers reveal differences in nitrate concentrations and nitrogen isotope composition between the two water bodies. Water temperature plays a role in affecting the isotopic composition of nitrate, with waste-related nitrogen source signals being more prominent in colder seasons. Isotopic assays are crucial for understanding nitrate pollution and informing effective agricultural and land management strategies.

Identification and apportionment of nitrate sources in the phreatic aquifers in Northern Jordan using a dual isotope method (δ15N and δ18O of NO3-)

Mutawakil Obeidat et al.

Summary: Groundwater contamination from nitrates is a global issue, with manure, urban wastewaters, and nitrified synthetic fertilizers identified as the main sources of nitrate pollution in the study area in northern Jordan. Proper management practices and land use planning are essential for sustainable groundwater resources in the area.
