Maximum principal strain criterion for fracture in orthotropic composites under combined tensile/shear loading

M. M. Mirsayar

Summary: This paper presents a strain-based criterion for investigating mixed-mode I/II fracture behavior in orthotropic materials. The criterion predicts the onset of mixed-mode I/II fracture by considering the T-stress effect and singular terms, and explores the role of T-stress in the fracture toughness assessment. The accuracy of the proposed criterion is evaluated by predicting fracture test data for wood species and laminated composites, and it is shown to be superior to other criteria in predicting the onset of mixed-mode I/II fracture in orthotropic materials.

A Semi-theoretical criterion based on the combination of strain energy release rate and strain energy density concepts (STSERSED): Establishment of a new approach to predict the fracture behavior of orthotropic materials

Summary: This article proposes a Semi-theoretical criterion for assessing the fracture of composite materials. The criterion utilizes experimental data under mixed-mode I/II loading to accurately predict the fracture behavior of orthotropic materials. Fitting experimental data into the criterion improves the accuracy of fracture estimation.

Applying the new experimental midpoint concept on strain energy density for fracture assessment of composite materials

Zahra Khaji et al.

Summary: A mixed-mode I/II fracture criterion, called Improved Strain Energy Density with Mid-point (ISEDM), is proposed in this paper to predict the fracture response of composite materials. The criterion takes into account the physics of fracture onset and different damage mechanisms near the crack tip. By considering the effects of the fracture process zone (FPZ) and T-stress, the ISEDM criterion accurately predicts the mixed-mode fracture process, especially when mode II is dominant.

Studies of Fracture Toughness in Concretes Containing Fly Ash and Silica Fume in the First 28 Days of Curing

Grzegorz Ludwik Golewski et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the mechanical parameters and fracture toughness of concretes containing noncondensed silica fume and siliceous fly ash, tested after 28 days and at an early age. The experiments demonstrated that adding silica fume to fly ash concretes significantly increases fracture toughness at an early age.

Summary: A new mixed mode I/II fracture criterion is proposed in this research, combining MSS theory and RIS concept for fracture investigation of orthotropic materials. RIS, based on the fact that cracks generally propagate along fibers, accurately predicts crack initiation and propagation direction.

Summary: The study demonstrates that adding 20% fly ash has a positive impact on the microstructure of concrete and reduces the size of interfacial microcracks, while adding 30% fly ash may lead to an increase in microcracks in the concrete.

Validation of the favorable quantity of fly ash in concrete and analysis of crack propagation and its length - Using the crack tip tracking (CTT) method - In the fracture toughness examinations under Mode II, through digital image correlation

Grzegorz Ludwik Golewski

Summary: This article focuses on analyzing fracture processes in fly ash concrete with the second cracking model. It determines the basic parameter of fracture mechanics in concrete elements according to Mode II fracture, and validates the results using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. The study proposes a new concept in concrete fracture analysis and evaluates the usefulness of DIC system for initial crack development in concrete elements subjected to shear.

Evaluation of fracture processes under shear with the use of DIC technique in fly ash concrete and accurate measurement of crack path lengths with the use of a new crack tip tracking method

Summary: The paper discusses the use of innovative optical and contactless DIC techniques to examine fracture processes in concrete with fly ash under shear loading. It investigates the critical stress intensity factor K-IIc and crack characteristics in loaded specimens, proposing a new concept for assessing fracture toughness of composites. It also presents a sophisticated solution for measuring actual crack path length (ALCP) and demonstrates the different brittleness and quasi-plastic behavior of unmodified concrete versus composites based on binary binders during the fracture process.

Summary: The new fracture criterion SERIS, based on the concept of strain energy release rate, is proposed for orthotropic materials to predict crack initiation angle and stress intensity factors in mode I and II loading. Experimental validation shows good agreement between SERIS criterion and experimental data.
