PorePy: an open-source software for simulation of multiphysics processes in fractured porous media

Eirik Keilegavlen et al.

Summary: Development of models and methods for dynamics in fractured rocks is an active research field, facing challenges such as high aspect ratio of fractures, complex fracture networks, and crucial impact of changing processes on fracture-rock interface. This paper discusses design principles and framework for introducing fractures in simulators, implemented in the open-source software PorePy for coupled simulation of flow, transport, and deformation in fractured reservoirs. The flexibility and validation of the framework are demonstrated through simulations of flow, poroelasticity, fracture deformation, and injection-driven fracture deformation. All results are reproducible using openly available simulation scripts.

A fully coupled numerical model of thermo-hydro-mechanical processes and fracture contact mechanics in porous media

Ivar Stefansson et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a mixed-dimensional thermo-hydro-mechanical model designed to capture the process-structure interplay using a discrete-fracture-matrix framework. The model incorporates tightly coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical processes based on balance laws for momentum, mass, and energy in subdomains representing the matrix and fractures. The model is complex but aims to provide valuable insights into subsurface dynamics.

Hydro-mechanical simulation and analysis of induced seismicity for a hydraulic stimulation test at the Reykjanes geothermal field, Iceland

Eirik Keilegavlen et al.

Summary: By combining seismic analysis with physics-based simulation, this study delves into injection-induced fault reactivation, focusing on the hydro-mechanical interplay between different faults and their host rocks. Conducted at the Reykjanes geothermal field, the research aims to develop an interdisciplinary framework for integrating various data types into a 3D, hydro-mechanical, faulted geothermal reservoir simulation model. The work demonstrates how seismic interpretations can enhance simulation models and vice versa, showcasing the value of fully coupled physics-based modeling in analyzing fault reactivation.

Hydraulic fracture induced by water injection in weak rock

Yue Gao et al.

Summary: This paper describes a two-dimensional model of a hydraulic fracture propagating in a weakly consolidated, highly permeable reservoir rock during a waterflooding operation. The model highlights essential differences from conventional hydraulic fracturing treatments of oil and gas wells and reveals the non-monotonic evolution of injection pressure over time. Poroelasticity significantly affects the response of the system, increasing injection pressure and delaying the time at which the peak pressure occurs.

A 2D mixed fracture-pore seepage model and hydromechanical coupling for fractured porous media

Chengzeng Yan et al.

Summary: A novel two-dimensional mixed fracture-pore seepage model for fluid flow in fractured porous media is proposed based on the computational framework of FDEM, providing a simple and effective tool for solving this problem. The simulation results verify the correctness of the model, and a coupled hydromechanical model is also established.
