Mobility of screw dislocation in BCC tungsten at high temperature in presence of carbon

Guillaume Hachet et al.

Summary: The study investigated the interaction of screw dislocations with carbon atoms in tungsten at high temperatures through in situ straining experiments and ab initio calculations. It was found that even low concentrations of carbon can significantly impact the mobility of screw dislocations, and the reappearance of Peierls mechanism was observed at high temperatures. The mobility of carbon-saturated screw dislocations was analyzed to determine kink-pair formation, nucleation, and migration energies, with the obtained results aligning well with experimental observations.

The brittle-to-ductile transition of pure tungsten processed by closed dual equal channel angular pressing process

Kemin Xue et al.

Summary: The deformation behavior of pure tungsten during closed dual equal channel angular pressing (CDECAP) was studied to understand the influence of microstructure changes on the brittle-to-ductile transition (DBT). It was found that a fine-grained microstructure with high fraction of low-angle grain boundaries, more edge dislocations, and a specific crystal texture was developed in pure tungsten during the CDECAP process. After 3 passes, the brittle-to-ductile transition temperature (DBTT) of pure tungsten significantly decreased. The results indicate that grain boundaries, dislocations, and crystal texture play important roles in controlling the ductility of pure tungsten during CDECAP.

Microstructure and annealing behavior of three rolled pure tungsten plates with different thickness reduction

Kang Wang et al.

Summary: The annealing behaviors of rolled pure tungsten plates with different thickness reduction ratios were investigated by hardness degradation during isothermal annealing at 1250 degrees C. The recrystallization rate was found to increase with increased rolling thickness reduction ratios, and the rolled texture was more random than the recrystallized one.

Ductile to brittle transition temperature of advanced tungsten alloys for nuclear fusion applications deduced by miniaturized three-point bending tests

Chao Yin et al.

Summary: A study was conducted on the DBTT and microstructure of various pure tungsten grades and tungsten alloys under neutron irradiation. Potassium doped tungsten alloys exhibited the lowest DBTT, followed by other reinforced tungsten grades. The microstructure and grain orientation were found to significantly impact the DBTT, emphasizing the importance of optimizing manufacturing processes based on grain shape and boundaries.

Fracture-mechanical properties of neutron irradiated ITER specification tungsten

E. Gaganidze et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of neutron irradiation on the fracture mechanical properties of ITER specification-conform tungsten materials, revealing severe material embrittlement at 800 degrees C. The transition temperature shift induced by the irradiation is evaluated to be 600-625 degrees C.

Theoretical investigation of the 70.5° mixed dislocations in body-centered cubic transition metals

Lorenz Romaner et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed comparative analysis of the M111 dislocation in five bcc transition metals, revealing significant variations in Peierls barriers and stresses among different metals. Tungsten and Molybdenum exhibit sizable barriers, while Niobium, Tantalum, and Iron have comparably small barriers. The predictions are consistent with internal friction measurements and offer new insights into the plasticity of bcc metals.

Mechanism of brittle-to-ductile transition in tungsten under small-punch testing

Yu-Heng Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, small-punch testing was conducted to explore the mechanism of brittle-to-ductile transition in as-rolled tungsten. Temperature and orientation dependent slip activities were found to be decisive factors controlling the transition.
