Crystal-plasticity modeling of phase transformation-viscoplasticity coupling in high-temperature shape memory alloys

Pawan S. Chaugule et al.

Summary: This study establishes a theoretical framework to explain the coupling between phase transformation and viscoplasticity in HTSMAs during actuation, simulating the alteration in functional properties and generation of irrecoverable deformations. By simulating the response of single crystals and polycrystals, the anisotropic and isotropic responses were captured at different scales.

Xiaofei Ju et al.

Summary: A crystal plasticity-based constitutive model is developed to describe the thermomechanical behavior of pseudoelastic NiTi single crystal. The model considers all inelastic mechanisms influencing the fatigue behavior of NiTi shape memory alloys and introduces new internal variables and evolution laws to reproduce the main features of anisotropic cyclic deformation of pseudoelastic NiTi single crystal.

Summary: This study extends a previous constitutive model to include anisotropy in NiTi tubes. The model is implemented in a finite element analysis and used to simulate the behavior of tubular NiTi structures under biaxial loadings. The simulations reproduce well the stress-average strain hystereses, transformation stress loci, and the evolution of localization in the form of helical bands.

Cyclic degeneration of elastocaloric effect for NiTi shape memory alloy: Experimental observation and constitutive model

Yong Zhang et al.

Summary: Based on experimental results, this study investigated the effect of loading level on the cyclic deformation and evolution of elastocaloric effect (eCE) for NiTi shape memory alloy wires. The results showed that transformation ratchetting and degeneration of eCE occurred during cyclic deformation, which worsened with the increase of loading level. It was also found that refrigeration capacity exhibited a positive correlation with loading level in the first loading cycle, but changed non-monotonically in steady-state cycles. Additionally, a two-step phase transformation between austenite (A) and martensite (M) phases was observed. A thermo-mechanically coupled cyclic constitutive model was proposed to explain the observed phenomena.

Effects of structural geometry on the localized deformation of superelastic NiTi sheets

Yao Xiao et al.

Summary: This paper examines the heterogeneous deformation of superelastic NiTi sheets with different aspect ratios. It is found that for aspect ratios lower than 2, deformation is primarily caused by a single transformation band, while for an aspect ratio of 4, multiple transformation bands coexist with unclear shapes.

Buckling and collapse of pseudoelastic NiTi tubes under bending

Karlos Kazinakis et al.

Summary: This study investigates the complex material behavior of pseudoelastic NiTi tubes and their interaction with geometric nonlinearity during bending. Experimental results show that the formation of high strain martensite banded patterns under tension leads to local ovalization of the tube, resulting in buckling and collapse.

Summary: This study introduces a three-dimensional constitutive model for shape memory alloys that considers both Transformation-Induced Plasticity (TRIP) and Two-Way Shape Memory Effect (TWSME), capable of capturing the large strains and rotations exhibited by SMAs under complex thermomechanical cycling. The model accurately captures stress-dependent TRIP generation and TWSME effects through internal state variables.

Multiscale analysis of the effect of interfacial energy on non-monotonic stress-strain response in shape memory alloys

S. Stupkiewicz et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of stress-induced martensitic microstructures on macroscopic mechanical properties of shape memory alloys in the pseudoelastic regime, considering size-dependent energy of interfaces. Multiscale analysis reveals that interfacial energy storage and dissipation strongly influence the shape and width of stress-strain hysteresis loops. Experimental and predicted results show high similarity in shape and width variations.

Nonlocal modeling and analysis of spatiotemporal patterns in non-isothermal phase transformation of NiTi strips

Mingpeng Li et al.

Summary: The study investigates the spatiotemporal evolution of macro-domain patterns in a NiTi thin strip during stress-induced nonisothermal phase transformation through 2D FEM simulations and 1D theoretical analysis. The simulations show that the pattern evolution is influenced by the applied stretching rate, with changes from nucleation and growth to periodic patterns and eventually stable deformation mode. The theoretical analysis reveals that the rate-dependent patterns are controlled by internal material and external driving parameters.

Modelling of propagating instabilities in pseudoelastic NiTi tubes under combined tension-torsion: helical bands and apparent yield locus

Mohsen Rezaee-Hajidehi et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the modelling of propagating instabilities and transformation patterns in NiTi tubes under combined tension-torsion loading. The developed model successfully represents experimentally observed effects, including the non-uniform transformation under tension-dominated loading and the importance of tension-compression asymmetry, transverse isotropy, and deformation-dependent response. Ambiguities in determination of the yield locus for tension-dominated loading are highlighted, emphasizing the impact on interpretation of experimental results.

Summary: This work presents a thermomechanical model for polycrystalline NiTi-based shape memory alloys, which can cover loading-mode dependent localization of the martensitic transformation and introduces a novel austenite-martensite interaction term for strain-softening of the material. The mathematical properties of the model are analyzed and numerical simulations on superelastic NiTi ribbon tension and bending of superelastic NiTi tube are used to illustrate the model's performance.

Effect of microstructure on fatigue of superelastic NiTi wires

Ondrej Tyc et al.

Summary: The superelastic fatigue tests of NiTi wires with different nanocrystalline microstructures showed that wires with smaller grains had shorter fatigue life. The dependency of fatigue life on microstructure and test temperature may be rationalized by considering the shielding effect of plastic deformation and deformation twinning ahead of advancing fatigue cracks. Increasing test temperature led to a decrease in fatigue life.

Thermomechanical coupling in cyclic phase transition of shape memory material under periodic stressing-experiment and modeling

Summary: The study investigated the evolution dynamics of a superelastic NiTi shape memory alloy rod under periodic tensile stress through experiments and modeling analysis. Significant frequency dependent oscillations, drifts and stabilizations in the strain, temperature and stress-strain curves were quantified, revealing the important role of thermomechanical coupling in the observed evolution dynamics. The stress-strain responses were found to be non-isothermal and distinct from displacement-controlled cyclic phase transition.
