Comparison of hydrated lime, paraffin wax and low-density polyethylene modified bituminous binders: a perspective of adhesion and moisture damage

Summary: The affinity between binder and aggregates in asphalt mixture is crucial in preventing moisture damage. Hydrated lime (HL) has been identified as the most suitable modifier for improving this affinity. The rolling bottle test (RBT) is often used to assess moisture susceptibility, but its reliance on visual inspection can lead to low reliability and repeatability. To address this deficiency, image analysis using MATLAB was conducted and found to be comparable to visual observation. The RBT results showed that HL addition improved affinity with granite, basalt, and greywacke aggregates, but had no effect on limestone aggregates. Additionally, a 10% HL substitution was found to be more effective than a 20% HL substitution in most cases.
