An energy-based model of dielectric elastomer minimum energy structures with stiffeners: Equilibrium configuration and the electromechanical response

Aman Khurana et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effectiveness of stiffeners in controlling warping and electromechanical response of DEMES. An energy-based analytical model is proposed to predict the initial equilibrium configuration of DEMES with stiffeners, and is verified through comparisons with finite element simulations and experiments. The study also analyzes the complex dynamic behavior of DEMES using the least-action principle, and examines the impact of geometric and material parameters on the initial equilibrium configuration and electromechanical response. The results can be used for pre-designing the geometrical and material properties of DEMES to enhance its electromechanical performance.

Modeling and analysis of an electro-magneto-elastic rotating cylindrical tube actuator

Deepak Kumar et al.

Summary: This paper presents the static modeling and analysis of a novel cylindrical tube actuator subjected to a rotation about the longitudinal axis with an internally applied air pressure under an electromagnetic field. The developed continuum mechanics-based electro-magneto-mechanical model is validated by comparing with the outputs of an existing spring roll actuator. Parametric studies are performed to investigate the effects of input pressure, electric field, magnetic field, fillers content, and actuator's rotational speed. The results provide important insights for the design of modern actuators with precise control and high load-carrying capability.

Constitutive modeling for the tear fracture of artificial tissues in human-like soft robots

Sankalp Gour et al.

Summary: Artificial tissues made of fiber-reinforced polymeric materials have mechanical properties similar to biological tissues, making them suitable for designing human-like soft robots. This research focuses on the constitutive modeling for tear fracture and its impact on the mechanical behavior of artificial tissues used in soft robotics. Experimental validation shows that artificial tissues have inherent anisotropic behavior, and the tear fracture model investigates the effects of physical parameters. The findings suggest that stretch gradient significantly affects the tear position during a gradual transition.

Dynamics of pneumatically coupled visco-hyperelastic dielectric elastomer actuators: Theoretical modeling and experimental investigation

Ajay Kumar et al.

Summary: This paper presents the development of a theoretical model for analyzing the dynamic electromechanical response of pneumatically connected DE (PCDE) actuators. The underlying energetics of the model takes into account various factors such as membrane pre-stretch, inflation pressure, membrane viscoelasticity, and time-dependent electric loading. The model introduces the concept of a pseudo air-spring and provides analytical expressions for the coupling function. Insights into influential parameters are obtained, and the model's predictive capability is validated through experimental comparisons.

Modeling and analysis of an electro-pneumatic braided muscle actuator

Deepak Kumar et al.

Summary: The present study focuses on the static modeling and analysis of a novel electro-pneumatic braided muscle (EPBM) actuator, developing a continuum mechanics-based electromechanical model to predict the actuator's response to combined pressure and voltage loading, including braid-to-braid frictional effects. Parametric studies are conducted on varying braid angle, input pressure, and voltage, and the impact of fiber-reinforcement in the bladder on actuator performance is also studied using the model.

Effect of viscoelasticity on the nonlinear dynamic behavior of dielectric elastomer minimum energy structures

Aman Khurana et al.

Summary: The dielectric elastomer minimum energy structure (DEMES) formed by attaching a pre-stretched dielectric elastomer (DE) membrane to a compliant frame exhibits both material and geometrical nonlinearity, significantly affecting the transient motion of the actuator. Analyzing the viscoelastic effect of the DE membrane on the DEMES dynamic behavior is crucial for efficient design, as revealed by the developed analytical model. The study predicts the delay in equilibrium state onset with increasing viscosity parameter, and demonstrates the significant impact of electric field and viscoelastic behavior on the bending angle of the DEMES actuator.

Effect of polymer chains entanglements, crosslinks and finite extensibility on the nonlinear dynamic oscillations of dielectric viscoelastomer actuators

Aman Khurana et al.

Summary: This paper theoretically analyzes the effect of internal properties of polymer chains on the performance of Dielectric Elastomer actuators in dynamic modes of actuation. The results show that strong entanglements and crosslinks in polymer chains result in lower deformation levels in DC dynamic modes of actuation. Moreover, the study assesses the periodicity and stability of nonlinear oscillations exhibited by viscoelastic DE actuators.

Nonlinear oscillations of electrically driven aniso-visco-hyperelastic dielectric elastomer minimum energy structures

Aman Khurana et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the nonlinear dynamic behavior of aniso-visco-hyperelastic DEMES actuators and explores the effects of anisotropy on their performance. The study reveals that material anisotropy enhances the equilibrium angle and resonant frequency of the structures, leading to a favorable impact on their actuation performance. The analytical model and trends presented in this study can be potentially utilized in the design and development of anisotropic DEMES actuators under time-dependent actuation.

Aman Khurana et al.

Summary: This study presents the dynamic modeling and analysis of a smart actuator, using an energy-based model to predict its response and investigate the impact of particle reinforcement on dynamic oscillations. The findings show that particle reinforcement enhances the polymer, reduces deformation, decreases oscillation intensity, and increases excitation frequency.

Static and dynamic stability of dielectric elastomer fiber composites

Atul Kumar Sharma et al.

Summary: This paper theoretically analyzes the stability of a dielectric elastomer fiber composite made up of two soft incompressible DE phases in the quasi-static and dynamic modes of actuation. An energy method is used for extracting the critical electric field and stretch in the dynamic mode. The results demonstrate that DE composite with higher fiber volume fraction exhibits higher electric field at the onset of instability in both static and DC dynamic modes of actuation.
