Cancer statistics, 2022

Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

Cancer statistics in China and United States, 2022: profiles, trends, and determinants

Changfa Xia et al.

Summary: The study compared the latest cancer profiles, trends, and determinants between China and the USA in 2022. China has a higher incidence of lung cancer, while the USA has more cases of breast cancer. Recent years have seen a significant decrease in lung and colorectal cancer rates in the USA, while liver cancer rates have slightly increased. In China, rates for stomach, liver, and esophageal cancer have decreased gradually, but colorectal cancer rates have increased for the whole population.

Assessment of the toxicity and carcinogenicity of double-walled carbon nanotubes in the rat lung after intratracheal instillation: a two-year study

Dina Mourad Saleh et al.

Summary: This study is the first long-term in vivo study to assess the effects of DWCNTs in the lung and pleura of rats after pulmonary exposure. The results demonstrate that DWCNTs are biopersistent in the rat lung, induce chronic inflammation, and can lead to pleural fibrosis and lung tumors.

Intratumoral therapies and in-situ vaccination for melanoma

Laura A. Huppert et al.

Summary: Intratumoral therapy, a method of delivering medication directly into the tumor, has shown potential in treating advanced unresectable and metastatic melanoma. It increases drug concentration locally, attracts immune cells to the tumor, and reduces systemic side effects. A wide range of intratumoral agents have been studied, and there is clinical and pre-clinical data supporting their use.

Advances in Oral Drug Delivery

Mohammed S. Alqahtani et al.

Summary: Oral route is the most common and preferred way of drug administration, due to its non-invasiveness and convenience. Factors affecting oral drug absorption include solubility, mucosal permeability, and stability in the gastrointestinal tract. Various pharmaceutical technologies like nanocarriers and micelles have been explored to improve oral drug absorption.

A success targeted nano delivery to lung cancer cells with multi-walled carbon nanotubes conjugated to bromocriptine

Fatemeh Mohammadhosseini Kamazani et al.

Summary: In this study, a new nano drug was prepared and evaluated, showing significant lethal effects on lung cancer cells while being non-toxic to normal cells. The nano-drug was able to induce apoptosis in lung cancer cells at a lower dose and may be a promising treatment for lung cancer. Additional studies on animal models are currently underway.

Postchronic Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Exposure Causes Irreversible Malignant Transformation of Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells through DNA Methylation Changes

Jin Wang et al.

Summary: Long-term pulmonary exposure to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can induce carcinogenesis and tumor metastasis. A study on human lung cells exposed to single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) showed that postchronic exposure led to increased migration and invasion abilities, irreversible malignant transformation, and promotion of carcinogenesis in vivo through DNA methylation and transcriptome dysregulation.
