Summary: Melatonin plays a crucial role in plant adaptation to hostile environments by regulating intracellular ion homeostasis. Its involvement in H+-ATPase activity, ROS-Ca(2+) hub operation, and hormonal cross-talks is summarized in this paper. The properties of melatonin also enable it to directly scavenge reactive oxygen species, preventing negative effects on ion channels and maintaining optimal cell operation. Future research should focus on identifying transporters directly regulated by melatonin and analyzing the evolutionary aspects of melatonin sensing and signaling.
