Metronidazole Degradation by UV and UV/H2O2 Advanced Oxidation Processes: Kinetics, Mechanisms, and Effects of Natural Water Matrices

Rongkui Su et al.

Summary: In this study, the degradation behavior and mechanism of metronidazole (MTZ) in UV and UV/H2O2 systems were compared. The results showed that hydroxyl radicals were the main active material in the UV/H2O2 system and played a major role in the degradation of MTZ. The advanced oxidation technology represented by hydroxyl radicals has great potential in removing residual antibiotics.

Sulfaquinoxaline Oxidation and Toxicity Reduction by Photo-Fenton Process

Vanessa Ribeiro Urbano et al.

Summary: The study found that both Fenton and photo-Fenton processes were effective for the oxidation of sulfaquinoxaline, with photo-Fenton showing better results in both setups with over 90% removal, over 50% mineralization, and bacterial growth inhibition less than 13%. The presence or absence of radiation was equally important for sulfaquinoxaline oxidation in both setups, but degradation rates were two to four times higher in the pilot plant compared to the laboratory bench.

Solar photon-Fenton process eliminates free plasmid DNA harboring antimicrobial resistance genes from wastewater

Pamela B. Vilela et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the elimination and inactivation of resistance-conferring plasmids (RCPs) in secondary wastewater using solar photo-Fenton, showing enhanced performance compared to the dark Fenton process. Solar photo-Fenton completely removed RCPs and rapidly inactivated target RCPs, demonstrating the potential to improve wastewater quality and reduce the spread of antimicrobial resistance in the environment.

Cost comparison of advanced oxidation processes for wastewater treatment using accumulated oxygen-equivalent criteria

Emmanuel Mousset et al.

Summary: Advanced oxidation processes have been widely studied for their effectiveness in removing biorefractory pollutants from wastewater. However, there is a lack of suitable methods to compare the performance of different AOPs. This paper proposes a novel criterion, the accumulated oxygen-equivalent chemical-oxidation dose (AOCD), to systematically compare diverse AOPs.
