Physiological responses of beet and cabbage plants exposed to copper and their potential insertion in human food chain

Odair J. Schmitt et al.

Summary: Copper can be toxic to vegetables and poses a risk to the human food chain. This study determines the critical concentrations of copper that are toxic to beet and cabbage plants and their potential to enter the human food chain. Additionally, the physiological and biochemical responses of these plants to increasing copper concentrations were assessed. High copper concentrations inhibit plant growth and pose a potential threat to the human food supply.

Mechanisms for increased pH-mediated amelioration of copper toxicity in Citrus sinensis leaves using physiology, transcriptomics and metabolomics

Jiang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the adaptive responses of citrus seedlings to different pH and copper concentrations. Increasing pH can alleviate copper toxicity by reducing copper accumulation and oxidative damage, improving leaf growth and metabolism. However, under low pH conditions, the adaptive responses fail to counteract the effects of copper toxicity.

Plant species and pH dependent responses to copper toxicity

Edicarla Trentin et al.

Summary: The study examined the effects of high copper levels in soil on physiological and morphological responses of cucumber and oat plants, finding that the two species displayed different reactions to copper concentrations and pH levels. Cucumbers were more sensitive to copper at low pH, while oats showed better growth potential in high copper concentrations.

Physiological and molecular adaptations of Citrus grandis roots to long-term copper excess revealed by physiology, metabolome and transcriptome

Qian-Qian Ren et al.

Summary: The study found that root adaptations to excess copper included increased biosynthesis and accumulation of secondary metabolites, enhanced copper retention in root cell walls, down- and upregulation of genes related to copper uptake and homeostasis, and improved capacity to maintain iron and energy homeostasis. While some genes and metabolites related to the detoxification of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species were elevated in roots exposed to excessive copper, they were unable to protect roots from oxidative damage.

Characterization of copper-induced-release of exudates by Citrus sinensis roots and their possible roles in copper-tolerance

Huan-Huan Chen et al.

Summary: Copper (Cu) excess is common in citrus orchards. This study investigated Cu-induced release of root exudates and its role in plant Cu-tolerance using sweet orange seedlings. The results showed that root-induced alkalization and Cu-stimulated release of root exudates played a key role in increasing root Cu accumulation and reducing Cu uptake and phytotoxicity.

Raised pH conferred the ability to maintain a balance between production and detoxification of reactive oxygen species and methylglyoxal in aluminum-toxic Citrus sinensis leaves and roots

Tao-Yu Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the interactive effects of low pH and aluminum toxicity on reactive oxygen species and methylglyoxal metabolism in Citrus sinensis seedlings. It was found that they increased H2O2 production and MG concentrations, decreased protein content, but could not effectively protect the plants against oxidative damage.

Summary: The study compared the effects of ascorbic acid (ASC) and glutathione (GSH) in alleviating copper (Cu) toxicity in rice, finding that ASC was more effective in restricting Cu2+ accumulation. ASC also better balanced Ca2+ and Mg2+, protected photosynthetic pigments, and activated antioxidant defense mechanisms compared to GSH.
