Combination effect of epsilon-poly-L-lysine and antibiotics against common bacterial pathogens

Sneha Sundaran et al.

Summary: This study investigated the combination of Epsilon-poly-l-lysine (EPL) with several antibiotics against bacterial pathogens and found synergistic or additive effects in some cases. EPL also showed inhibitory activities against biofilm formation and disrupted preformed biofilm. Furthermore, EPL exhibited low cytotoxicity in tests with Balb/3t3 fibroblasts.

Global mortality associated with 33 bacterial pathogens in 2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Kevin S. Ikuta et al.

Summary: This study provides comprehensive estimates of deaths associated with 33 bacterial pathogens worldwide, highlighting the significant global health burden of bacterial infections. Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are the top five deadliest pathogens, and the deadliest infectious syndromes and pathogens vary by location and age.

Artemisinin derivative DHA27 enhances the antibacterial effect of aminoglycosides against Pseudomonas aeruginosa by inhibiting mRNA expression of aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes

Nuoyan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the antibacterial sensitization effect of DHA27 combined with tobramycin in tobramycin-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The combination showed significant antibacterial effects on many resistant strains and reduced bacterial load in the spleen and lungs in a mouse model. The study also revealed that the effect was related to the inhibition of mRNA expression of aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes.

Assessing Rates of Co-Resistance and Patient Outcomes in Multidrug-Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Haley J. Appaneal et al.

Summary: We studied antibiotic co-resistance patterns in a national group of hospitalized patients with multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. Co-resistance to commonly used antibiotic classes was common, making it difficult to select appropriate antibiotics for treatment. Poor outcomes were observed for all patients, regardless of different patterns of co-resistance. New antibiotics are needed to help treat hospitalized patients with multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa infections.

The membrane-active polyaminoisoprenyl compound NV716 re-sensitizes Pseudomonas aeruginosa to antibiotics and reduces bacterial virulence

Gang Wang et al.

Summary: The polyaminoisoprenyl compound NV716 re-sensitizes Pseudomonas aeruginosa to antibiotics by permeabilizing the outer membrane and increases the activity of antibiotics on biofilms.

Cystic Fibrosis: Recent Insights into Inhaled Antibiotic Treatment and Future Perspectives

Giovanni Taccetti et al.

Summary: Inhaled antibiotics have greatly improved respiratory diseases in cystic fibrosis patients, especially in treating chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. These antibiotics offer advantages over systemic therapy by delivering high drug concentrations directly to the lungs. Alternating treatment with inhaled antibiotics is crucial for improving patient outcomes, and long-term use can prevent acute pulmonary exacerbations.
