The phylogeny of Salix revealed by whole genome re-sequencing suggests different sex-determination systems in major groups of the genus

Sergey Gulyaev et al.

Summary: This study used whole genome re-sequencing data to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships of willows. The results revealed differences between clade Salix and clade Vetrix, with multiple subclades identified within each clade. The chloroplast genomes provided better resolution for distinguishing these two clades. The findings highlight the importance of whole genome re-sequencing for phylogenomic studies of willows.

Genetic mapping of sexually dimorphic volatile and non-volatile floral secondary chemistry of a dioecious willow

Ken Keefover-Ring et al.

Summary: Secondary chemistry mediates important ecological interactions in plants, and this study examines the genetic basis of the sexually dimorphic secondary chemistry in male and female Salix purpurea willow catkins. The research identifies the specific chemicals produced by each sex, maps quantitative trait loci (QTL) for these traits, and identifies candidate genes associated with the synthesis of these chemicals. The findings contribute to our understanding of the evolution and maintenance of dioecy in plants.

Repeated turnovers keep sex chromosomes young in willows

Deyan Wang et al.

Summary: This study characterized the sex determination systems in two Salix species and examined the evolutionary forces driving sex chromosome turnovers. The results revealed similarities between the sex determination mechanisms of willows and poplars, involving homologs of a specific gene. The study also identified at least two sex turnover events in Salix, which were partially explained by theoretical models of deleterious mutation load and sexually antagonistic selection. The study contributes to our understanding of the evolution of sex chromosomes in Salicaceae species and provides valuable insights for studying sex chromosomes in other species.

A General Model to Explain Repeated Turnovers of Sex Determination in the Salicaceae

Wenlu Yang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the Populus species P. euphratica and P. alba have XY and ZW sex determination systems, respectively, driven by repeated translocations of a Helitron-like transposon. This translocation may have captured sequences orthologous to a type-A cytokinin response regulator gene. This gene is hypothesized to be a master regulator of sex determination for the entire family, providing insights into the diversification of sex chromosomes in flowering plants.

Henrik R. Hallingback et al.

Summary: Our study on wild Salix viminalis accessions revealed that sex determination in this species is primarily controlled by one locus on chromosome 15, with females being the heterogametic sex. We also identified a translocation from chromosome 9 to the W chromosome.

Sex determination through X-Y heterogamety in Salix nigra

Brian J. Sanderson et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel sex-linked region (SLR) in Salix nigra was identified, showing XY heterogamety. The SLR is characterized by strong recombination suppression and an excess of low-frequency alleles, possibly due to a recent bottleneck in population size or factors related to positive selection. This discovery sheds light on factors influencing plant sex chromosome evolution and highlights the dynamic nature of sex chromosomes.

Chromosome-scale assembly of the genome of Salix dunnii reveals a male-heterogametic sex determination system on chromosome 7

Li He et al.

Summary: The study presents the assembly and analysis of the first chromosome-scale genome of a female willow tree, revealing the evolution of male heterogamety in the Salix genus and identifying a sex-determining factor on chromosome 7. The sex-linked region on chromosome 7 in female willows, corresponding to the X chromosome, is enriched with transposable element insertions and protein-coding genes gained through duplications. Analysis of transcriptome data shows male-biased genes in catkin and leaf tissues, with enrichment in the pseudo-autosomal regions.

Extended haplotype-phasing of long-read de novo genome assemblies using Hi-C

Summary: FALCON-Phase is a phasing tool that uses ultra-long-range Hi-C chromatin interaction data to extend phase blocks of partially-phased diploid assemblies to chromosome or scaffold scale. This method is accurate without parental data and performs better in samples with higher heterozygosity, achieving up to 97% accuracy for some species.

Integrative genomics reveals paths to sex dimorphism in Salix purpurea L

Brennan Hyden et al.

Summary: In this study, sex dimorphism and gene expression in developing catkins of the bioenergy crop Salix purpurea were investigated in 159 F-2 individuals. The results identified candidate master regulator genes related to hormone signaling, epigenetic modification, and regulation of transcription in the pathways of sex determination. The research also revealed differences in expression between males and females in various processes, suggesting a complex mechanism of sex determination in Salix purpurea.
