The cognitive and psychiatric subacute impairment in severe Covid-19

Pedro J. Serrano-Castro et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the cognitive functions and related biomarkers in survivors of severe SARS-CoV-2 infection, and found a preferential involvement of episodic and working memory, executive functions, and attention in the cognitive domains. Anxiety and depression were also consistently present in the cohort. Compared to non-infected patients and a healthy general population, severe COVID-19 patients had elevated concentrations of various plasma chemokines.

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor as a Potential Biomarker of Neuroinflammation and Frontal Cognitive Impairment in Patients with Alcohol Use Disorder

Nerea Requena-Ocana et al.

Summary: This study suggests that alcohol-induced alterations in chemokines and VEGFA might contribute to the neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment associated with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Monitoring VEGFA/chemokine levels could be used as potential biomarkers for cognitive impairment in AUD patients.

Alcohol Withdrawal Is an Oxidative Stress Challenge for the Brain: Does It Pave the Way toward Severe Alcohol-Related Cognitive Impairment?

Virgile Clergue-Duval et al.

Summary: Chronic and excessive alcohol use can lead to alcohol-related neurocognitive disorders, and inadequate management of alcohol withdrawal reactions may result in severe consequences such as seizures or delirium tremens, with oxidative stress playing a key role in these conditions. Therefore, conducting research and developing neuroprotective strategies are crucial for preventing severe alcohol-related brain damage and cognitive impairments.

Why do we not reverse the path? Stress can cause depression, reduction of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and increased inflammation

Angelo Emilio Claro et al.

Summary: The aim of this paper is to discuss the relationship between stress, depression, increased inflammation, and reduced BDNF levels. It is hypothesized that severe or prolonged stress may be a driving factor for the onset of depression. Both stress and depression can activate the production of pro-inflammatory genes, leading to chronic inflammation and reduced BDNF levels. The paper also explores possible reasons for the increased risk of type 2 diabetes in individuals with depression.

Cerebrospinal Fluid Biomarkers in Patients With Alcohol Use Disorder and Persistent Cognitive Impairment

Julien Azuar et al.

Summary: This study investigated CSF biomarkers in alcohol-dependent patients with persistent cognitive deficits, revealing a high prevalence of AD and abnormalities in their CSF profiles. It is important to consider using CSF biomarkers in addition to imaging and neuropsychological testing for evaluating alcohol-related cognitive impairment.

Lower regional grey matter in alcohol use disorders: evidence from a voxel-based meta-analysis

Lei Li et al.

Summary: The study found GM atrophy in the right hippocampus, right insula, and left middle frontal gyrus in AUD patients, with lower levels compared to controls. Additionally, increasing GM atrophy in the right insula was associated with longer abstinence duration. Male ratio was positively correlated with GM atrophy in the left middle frontal gyrus.

Neurofilament Light Chain Is a Promising Biomarker in Alcohol Dependence

Yanfei Li et al.

Summary: Alcohol dependence causes structural and functional damage in the brain, making it crucial to find potential biomarkers for diagnosis and evaluation. This study supports the use of serum neurofilament light as a non-invasive biomarker with implications for assessing brain damage severity, progression, and prognosis in alcohol dependence.

Ascorbic Acid Deficiency Prevalence and Associated Cognitive Impairment in Alcohol Detoxification Inpatients: A Pilot Study

Virgile Clergue-Duval et al.

Summary: Malnutrition, specifically ascorbic acid (AA) deficiency, has been found to potentially impact cognitive function in patients with alcohol use disorder. This study investigated the prevalence of AA deficiency in inpatients undergoing alcohol detoxification and its association with cognitive impairment during early abstinence. Deficiency and insufficiency of AA were observed in a significant number of patients, with factors such as male gender, compensated cirrhosis, street homelessness, and sedative use disorder being linked to lower AA levels and cognitive impairment.

Neurofilaments as Emerging Biomarkers of Neuroaxonal Damage to Differentiate Behavioral Frontotemporal Dementia from Primary Psychiatric Disorders: A Systematic Review

Summary: The behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia is a clinical syndrome with symptoms including behavioral and social cognitive impairment. Neuroimaging is helpful but not perfect in diagnosing the syndrome, and neurofilaments are being studied as potential biomarkers for distinguishing it from primary psychiatric disorders.

Exploring relationships between alcohol consumption, inflammation, and brain structure in a heavy drinking sample

Hollis C. Karoly et al.

Summary: Chronic alcohol consumption is associated with structural brain changes and increased inflammation, with heavy drinking linked to lower gray matter thickness and higher white matter diffusivity. Negative associations were found between gray matter and alcohol consumption, as well as neuronal damage marker NfL, while the inflammatory cytokine IL-6 was not significantly related to alcohol use or brain structure.

Evaluation of neurotrophic factors and education level as predictors of cognitive decline in alcohol use disorder

Nerea Requena-Ocana et al.

Summary: The study suggests that individuals with lower educational levels are more likely to start alcohol consumption early and develop alcohol dependence, along with impaired frontal cognitive function. Additionally, cognitive reserve, neurotrophic factors NT-3 and BDNF may act as compensatory mechanisms for cognitive decline in the early stages of AUD, but not in later stages.

Summary: NF-L levels are elevated in patients with MS and psychiatric disorders, but the relationship between depression and anxiety in RRMS-Fingo patients and NF-L levels is not statistically significant. MS events such as anxiety and depression may contribute to the onset of clinical relapses, subclinical cases, and neurodegeneration.
