The mitochondrial permeability transition: Recent progress and open questions

Paolo Bernardi et al.

Summary: The basis of mitochondrial permeability transition, a Ca2+-dependent permeability increase of the inner membrane, has been successfully defined, and it has been recognized as a regulator of mitochondrial ion homeostasis and a mechanism of cell death. However, there are still controversial mechanisms regarding the permeability transition that require further research for explanation.

Personalized Medicine in Mitochondrial Health and Disease: Molecular Basis of Therapeutic Approaches Based on Nutritional Supplements and Their Analogs

Vincenzo Tragni et al.

Summary: Mitochondrial diseases result from mutations affecting nuclear or mitochondrial genes, and there is no specific therapy available for complete recovery. Symptomatic treatments using antioxidant cocktails and drugs are commonly used, but their effectiveness needs to be scientifically demonstrated.

The Joint Influence of Tl+ and Thiol-Modifying Agents on Rat Liver Mitochondrial Parameters In Vitro

Sergey M. Korotkov et al.

Summary: This study found that the effects of thiol-modifying agents and MPTP inhibitors on MPTP opening were diverse and concentration-dependent. The research suggests that Tl+-induced MPTP opening in calcium-loaded mitochondrial inner membrane may be caused by the interaction of active groups. This study provides further insight into the causes of thallium toxicity and may be useful in developing new treatments for thallium poisoning.

MitoNEET's Reactivity of Lys55 toward Pyridoxal Phosphate Demonstrates its Activity as a Transaminase Enzyme

Courtney Kunk et al.

Summary: MitoNEET is a mitochondrial protein belonging to the CDGSH iron-sulfur domain family, with [2Fe-2S] redox activity. It is considered a potential target for drug development to treat various disorders. However, the cellular function of mitoNEET has not been fully elucidated yet.

Effects of Tl+ on the inner membrane thiol groups, respiration, and swelling in succinate-energized rat liver mitochondria were modified by thiol reagents

Sergey M. Korotkov

Summary: The study showed that both Tl+ and thiol reagents can affect the inner membrane of mitochondria by increasing swelling and decreasing content, potential, and respiration. The most pronounced effect was observed with phenylarsine oxide, which reacts with thiol groups in the hydrophobic regions of the membrane. Effective concentrations of other reagents were approximately one to two orders of magnitude higher than phenylarsine oxide.
