HDL cholesterol concentrations and risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease - Insights from randomized clinical trials and human genetics

Emilie Westerlin Kjeldsen et al.

Summary: Over the past seven decades, studies have observed an inverse association between HDL cholesterol concentrations and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk. However, recent evidence from human genetics and randomized clinical trials suggest that targeting HDL cholesterol concentrations may not be a viable approach for preventing ASCVD.

Digestive properties of half-fin anchovy hydrolysates/glucose Maillard reaction products and modulation effects on intestinal microbiota

Ru Song et al.

Summary: The digestibility and microbial effects of half-fin anchovy hydrolysates/glucose MRPs were investigated, showing potential positive impacts on gut microbiota with increased anti-inflammatory activity in both female and male mice. Sex-related differences in bacterial abundance were observed, with alterations in the density of specific phyla and higher levels of certain acids in feces after treatment.

Dose-dependent effects of apple pectin on alleviating high fat-induced obesity modulated by gut microbiota and SCFAs

Yuanyuan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study found a dose-dependent relationship between pectin intake and changes in body weight, fat accumulation, serum triglyceride levels, and acetate and propionate concentrations. Additionally, pectin was found to modulate the gut microbiota and enhance short-chain fatty acid production, leading to attenuations in colonic injury and liver steatosis.

Comparison of tissue distribution of free and protein bound Ne-carboxymethyllysine after long-term oral administration to mice

Xiaojin Yuan et al.

Summary: This study compared the uptake, tissue distribution, and fecal excretion of free and bound CML in a dietary context. The results showed that bound CML had a higher uptake, accumulation, and fecal excretion in the body compared to free CML.

SOD1, more than just an antioxidant

Elis Cristina Araujo Eleutherio et al.

Summary: During cellular respiration, radicals like superoxide can cause cell damage, but cells use the enzyme Cu/Zn Superoxide Dismutase (SOD1) to convert superoxide into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. In addition to its primary function, SOD1 also plays other roles, such as activating gene transcription or functioning as an RNA binding protein.

Exposure of Caenorhabditis elegans to Dietary Nε-Carboxymethyllysine Emphasizes Endocytosis as a New Route for Intestinal Absorption of Advanced Glycation End Products

Constance Dubois et al.

Summary: In this study, a new route for the intestinal absorption of dietary CML (dCML) in Caenorhabditis elegans was identified through endocytosis, which may be mediated by scavenger receptors. Exposure to dCML induced reproductive defects and a transcriptional response reflecting oxidative, carbonyl, and protein folding stresses in the worms. These findings open up new perspectives for better characterizing the pathophysiological mechanisms of dietary advanced glycation end products (dAGEs).
