One-pot production of thermostable PHB biodegradable polymer by co-producing bio-melanin pigment in engineered Escherichia coli

SeoA Park et al.

Summary: In this study, pyomelanin pigment was successfully incorporated into polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) to form pyoPHB film. The pyoPHB film exhibited increased thermostability and antioxidant activity compared to control PHB film. Although the volume resistivity increased, it remained within the range of commercial plastics. Interestingly, the co-producing strain was able to stably produce pyomelanin even at high levels of PHB content, which was attributed to increased ATP pools.

Evaluation of the biodegradation of polymeric materials in the freshwater environment-An attempt to prolong and accelerate the biodegradation experiment

Dagmar Sasinkova et al.

Summary: This study aimed to verify the applicability of international standards for testing slowly degradable polymeric materials and to accelerate the biodegradation testing by increasing the temperature. The results showed that the increase in temperature did not accelerate the biodegradation process and led to undesirable phenomena at 37 degrees C.

PLA/PHB-Based Materials Fully Biodegradable under Both Industrial and Home-Composting Conditions

Maria Fogasova et al.

Summary: In order to make bioplastics more widely applicable, ready-to-use plastic material formulations with tailored properties should be available, ideally being home-compostable. This article presents materials based on PLA and PHB blends, which are intended for various applications and are fully biodegradable.

Alternative optimization routes for improving the performance of poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) based plastics

Demetres Briassoulis et al.

Summary: Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), a group of bio-based polymeric materials formed by microorganisms, include the well-known member Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). Despite PHB's high biodegradability and biocompatibility, its low ductility and susceptibility to thermal degradation limit its applications. Alternative strategies such as modification and blending are needed to enhance the performance of PHB for producing bio-based plastics with improved properties.

Summary: Despite the considerable benefits plastics have offered, the current approaches to their production, use, and disposal are not sustainable. The authors demonstrate a sustainable hydrosetting method for processing a cellulose cinnamate polymer, which can be repeatedly programmed into various 2D or 3D stable shapes, extending their lifetime for practical applications.
