Protective role of strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.) honey against cyto/genotoxic effects induced by ultraviolet B radiation in vitro

Andreja Juric et al.

Summary: Strawberry tree honey is commonly used in Mediterranean traditional medicine for treating wounds and infections. This study demonstrates the cyto-/genoprotective properties of the honey against UVB radiation-induced damage at the cellular level, with its phenolics and high content of homogentisic acid playing crucial roles in the protective effects.

Comparison of irinotecan and oxaliplatin as the first-line therapies for metastatic colorectal cancer: a meta-analysis

Sadayuki Kawai et al.

Summary: The study compared the efficacy and toxicity profiles of IRI- and Ox-based regimens as first-line treatments for mCRC, finding no significant difference in terms of overall survival, progression-free survival, and objective response rate between the two groups. However, there were differences in toxicity profile, with IRI-based regimens associated with higher incidence of certain adverse events, while Ox-based regimens had different toxicities such as thrombocytopenia and peripheral sensory neuropathy.

The Sardinian Bitter Honey: From Ancient Healing Use to Recent Findings

Ignazio Floris et al.

Summary: Sardinian bitter honey, obtained from the autumnal flowering of the strawberry tree, has a long history and tradition in popular use, especially as a medicine. Studies have confirmed its potential for medical use due to its antioxidant, antiradical, and cancer-preventing properties. Despite similar properties in other Mediterranean strawberry tree honeys, Sardinian bitter honey maintains its unique geographical and historical identity recognized by other Mediterranean cultures.

Homogentisic acid, a main phenolic constituent of strawberry tree honey, protects human peripheral blood lymphocytes against irinotecan-induced cytogenetic damage in vitro

Andreja Juric et al.

Summary: The study found that HGA in strawberry tree honey posed no significant cytotoxic threat to human peripheral blood lymphocytes in vitro, had a negligible potential for causing cytogenetic damage in treated cells, and efficiently counteracted the detrimental cytogenetic effects of the antineoplastic drug irinotecan. Further research is needed to explore the safety profile of HGA and its potential for developing new nutraceutical products.
