Discovery and clinical translation of novel glaucoma biomarkers

Gala Beykin et al.

Summary: Glaucoma and other optic neuropathies involve progressive dysfunction and loss of retinal ganglion cells. Developing novel biomarkers for glaucoma is crucial for improving diagnosis and monitoring disease progression. Integrating exploratory biomarker outcomes into prospective therapeutic trials is a key step for the future.

Adaptive responses to neurodegenerative stress in glaucoma

David J. Calkins

Summary: Glaucoma is characterized by sensitivity to intraocular pressure and degeneration of the retinal ganglion cell projection to the brain, leading to vision loss. The disease involves a pathogenic triumvirate of inflammatory, oxidative, and metabolic stress, but recent evidence shows that the optic projection may have adaptive processes against neurodegeneration.

Chronic mild and acute severe glaucomatous neurodegeneration derived from silicone oil-induced ocular hypertension

Fang Fang et al.

Summary: We established a silicone oil-induced ocular hypertension (SOHU) mouse model to simulate two distinct glaucoma types: a chronic model with sustained moderate IOP elevation and mild neurodegeneration, and an acute model with greatly elevated IOP and severe inner retina degeneration. Despite SO removal quickly normalizing IOP, glaucomatous neurodegeneration continued to advance in both models. This expanded model will assist in selecting neuroprotectants and understanding their molecular mechanisms.

Advanced Retinal Imaging and Ocular Parameters of the Rhesus Macaque Eye

Kira H. Lin et al.

Summary: By conducting comprehensive examinations and utilizing advanced imaging techniques on rhesus macaque eyes, it was found that the ocular structure and function of this species are very similar to that of the human eye, particularly in terms of macular structure and retinal function. This makes rhesus macaques an ideal model for studying human eye diseases.
