Crystallization behavior and density functional theory study of solution combustion synthesized silicon doped calcium phosphates

Z. Mollaei et al.

Summary: The influence of heat treatment on the properties of silicon-doped calcium phosphates was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and experimental methods. The results showed that the crystallization rate was affected by the fuel type and the amount of Si4+ ions. Crystal growth and doping of Si4+ ions on the surface of CaPs were found to decrease the activation energy of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The research suggests that the crystallized HAp structure has the potential to reduce oxidative stress in the human body.

CaO-B2O3-SiO2 glass fibers for wound healing

Seiji Yamaguchi et al.

Summary: A cotton-like glass fiber pad made of borate glass has been proven to have remarkable wound healing effect and is approved for sale as a novel wound dressing. This study investigated glass fibers of different compositions to determine the mechanism of its wound healing effect, and found that the release of borate and calcium ions from the glass fibers correlated with fibroblast viability. The formation of apatite-like phase on the fiber surface may contribute to the adsorption of biological components.

Configurational entropy as a simple input data for glass science and engineering

Z. Mollaei et al.

Summary: The current study proposes new input data for glass science and engineering based on simple calculations of configurational entropy. The configurational entropy of silicate-based glasses with different amounts of alkali or alkaline earth oxide additives was calculated, and the relation between entropy and glass properties was theoretically investigated. The results revealed positive or negative slopes in the entropy-Tg curves for different glass compositions, which could be attributed to changing concentrations of non-bridging oxygens, increasing entropy, and changing melting points.
