Selective Photoinduced Dimerization and Slow Recovery of a BLUF Domain of EB1

Kosei Shibata et al.

Summary: This study found that the light-dependent BLUF domain of EB1 forms a dimer upon illumination, with a slow dark recovery. The dimer formed by both light- and dark-state protomers is more stable than that formed by two light-state protomers, and the dark recovery of this dimer is much slower. Transient grating measurements revealed that this conformational change occurs simultaneously with dimerization.

The Role of Oxidative Stress in the Pathogenesis of Vitiligo: A Culprit for Melanocyte Death

Yijie Xuan et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of vitiligo and discusses the mechanisms of interaction between oxidative stress and various modes of cell death. The findings suggest that oxidative stress acts as an initiator for different cell death modes through complex mechanisms, such as autophagy, apoptosis, and ferroptosis. These insights provide new ideas for exploring the pathogenesis and potential therapeutic targets of vitiligo.

Slow Conformational Changes of Blue Light Sensor BLUF Proteins in Milliseconds

Shunrou Tokonami et al.

Summary: The study revealed slow reaction kinetics in milliseconds for all examined BLUF proteins, contrary to previous beliefs of nanosecond red shifts. The slower dynamics in the tau(2)-phase were found to be strongly influenced by the size and nature of the C-terminal region adjacent to the BLUF domain, indicating its importance for biological functions. These results highlight the significance of Trp in the BLUF domain and propose a reaction scheme for BLUF reaction.

Silver cluster interactions with Pterin: Complex structure, binding energies and spectroscopy

Andrey A. Buglak et al.

Summary: Metal nanoclusters have been widely used in biosensing, bioimaging, and diagnostics due to their small size, great biocompatibility, and sensitivity to the biomolecular environment. In this study, the interaction between silver nanoclusters and pterin compounds was investigated using quantum chemistry methods. It was found that different pterin atoms selectively bind to silver nanoclusters depending on the cluster's charge and size. These findings suggest that the absorption and vibrational spectra of silver-pterin complexes can be exploited for biosensor development.

It explains how a conserved asparagine stabilizes the semiquinone FAD chromophore through hydrogen bonding, and how rearrangement of amino acids around the final tryptophan radical opens it up to the solvent. These findings highlight the importance of the protein environment in stabilizing the radical pair state for the function of (6-4) photolyases and cryptochromes.
