Effect of Mg Pretreatment and Ce Addition on Cleanliness and Inclusion Evolution in High-Nitrogen Stainless Bearing Steels

Hao Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of Mg pretreatment and Ce addition on cleanliness and inclusion evolution in high-nitrogen stainless bearing steels was systematically investigated. The results showed that Mg pretreatment and Ce addition effectively decreased the contents of O and S and changed the composition and evolution process of inclusions. The optimum Mg pretreatment content was found to be between 0.0026 and 0.0040 wt pct.

Experimental and DFT study on cerium inclusions in clean steels

Xiangjun Liu et al.

Summary: By investigating the evolution process of Ce-O-S-Al inclusions in clean steels using thermodynamic calculation, metallographic examination and first-principles calculation, this study provided insights into improving mechanical properties of steels. The research showed that the differences in hardness, toughness, brittleness, and thermal expansion coefficient between Ce inclusions and iron matrix could explain the enhancement of mechanical properties in the tested steel.

Effects of Mg and La on the evolution of inclusions and microstructure in Ca-Ti treated steel

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: The evolution of inclusions and the formation of acicular ferrite in Ca-Ti treated steel after Mg and La addition were systematically investigated. The types of inclusions in the molten steel and final quenched samples were similar, but with differences in morphology, where the La-containing sample had the smallest average inclusion size and highest number density. Additionally, the percentage of acicular ferrite increased due to the increase in effective inclusions in the La-containing sample.

In-depth analysis of the fatigue mechanism induced by inclusions for high-strength bearing steels

Chao Gu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the stress distribution and fatigue behavior influenced by voids adjacent to inclusions, showing that the effects of inclusions on fatigue life reduce significantly when mechanical properties are similar. Additionally, it was found that the position of voids near inclusions plays a critical role in determining their impact on fatigue behavior.

Ultrahigh cycle fatigue fracture mechanism of high-quality bearing steel obtained through different deoxidation methods

Wei Xiao et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mechanism of oxide inclusions in fatigue crack initiation in the VHCF regime, revealing differences in inclusion types and their effects on fatigue life in Si- and Al-deoxidized steels. Cracks in Al-deoxidized steel are caused by calcium aluminate inclusions, while most fatigue cracks in Si-deoxidized steel are triggered by the inhomogeneity of the steel matrix. The mechanisms of fatigue fracture caused by calcium aluminate and silicate inclusions are analyzed, showing varying impacts on the fatigue life of bearing steels.

Dynamic mass variation and multiphase interaction among steel, slag, lining refractory and nonmetallic inclusions: Laboratory experiments and mathematical prediction

Ju-jin Wang et al.

Summary: The mass transfer among the multiphase interactions during the refining process of a bearing steel was studied using laboratory experiments and numerical kinetic prediction. The slag phase was found to significantly accelerate the mass transfer rate, with the system containing slag having a rate approximately 5 times larger than the system without slag. The established kinetic model accurately predicted the composition transformation of inclusions and the mass transfer of magnesium and aluminum in the steel.
