Effect of Cooling Rate on the Microstructure and Solidification Characteristics of Al-20%Mg2Si In Situ Composites Using Computer-Aided Thermal Analysis Technique

S. Ashkvary et al.

Summary: The formation, size, and morphology of Mg2Si intermetallics in Al-Mg2Si in situ composites significantly influence the mechanical properties of the alloy. Cooling rate during solidification has a direct impact on the microstructure and characteristics of the reinforcement particles. This study investigated the effect of different cooling rates on the microstructure and solidification parameters of Al-20%Mg2Si in situ composite using cooling curve thermal analysis technique. The results showed that increasing the cooling rate resulted in higher nucleation temperature of primary Mg2Si, binary eutectic, and ternary eutectic, while decreasing the growth temperature of the eutectic reactions. Furthermore, the Mg2Si reinforcement particles changed from coarse dendritic to fine polygonal shape, accompanied by decreased size and increased density.

FABRICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF HYBRID ALUMINIUM (Al6061) METAL MATRIX COMPOSITE REINFORCED WITH SiC, B4C AND MoS2 VIA STIR CASTING

Ayalew Abebe Emiru et al.

Summary: This work focuses on the fabrication and characterization of hybrid aluminium Al6061 alloy metal matrix composites reinforced with MoS2, SiC and B4C. The study investigates the influence of different weight percentages of these reinforcements on the physical, mechanical, tribological and morphological behavior of the composites. The results show that the addition of SiC and MoS2 increases the density of the composite, while increasing the weight percentage of B4C improves the hardness and ultimate tensile strength. The tribology study reveals that the wear performance of hybrid composites is better than non-reinforced specimens, with wear debris and delamination wear being the dominant wear mechanisms.

P. Chandrasekar et al.

Summary: In this research, Al alloy metal matrix composites reinforced with electroless Ni-P-coated Al2O3 particles were fabricated using the stir-squeeze casting method. The results showed that the addition of coated Al2O3 particles significantly reduced porosity and improved mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength, and impact strength. The composite also exhibited reduced specific wear rate and coefficient of friction compared to the as-cast scrap Al alloy. However, the addition of uncoated Al2O3 particles decreased compressive strength.
