On the Effect of Hot Rolling on Inclusion Size and Distribution in a Cast AISI 1070 Steel Railroad Wheel

Jacob M. Summers et al.

Summary: The goal of this study is to investigate the impact of hot deformation on shrinkage porosity and nonmetallic inclusions in an industrially produced wheel casting. The results show that hot rolling can lead to pore closure and improved distribution of inclusions, thus enhancing the mechanical properties of the casting.

Effect of aluminium content on the formation of inclusions in Fe-5Mn-xAl steels

Michelia Alba et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing Al content significantly increased the total amount of inclusions in the lightweight Fe-5Mn-xAl steels, especially AlN-MnS inclusions. AlN formed during cooling of the steel and could co-precipitate with Al(2)O(3) to form AlN + Al(2)O(3) inclusions.

Mechanisms for suppressing discontinuous precipitation and improving mechanical properties of NiAl-strengthened steels through nanoscale Cu partitioning

B. C. Zhou et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that copper is effective in promoting continuous NiAl precipitation and suppressing discontinuous precipitation in NiAl-strengthened steels, leading to improved mechanical properties. The mechanisms involved Cu partitioning and segregation have been quantitatively evaluated, highlighting the significant enhancement in yield strength and ductility of the new NiAl-strengthened steels.

Removal of Alumina Inclusions from Molten Steel by Ceramic Foam Filtration

Soumava Chakraborty et al.

Summary: The study investigated the efficiency of removal of solid alumina inclusions in stainless steel castings and found that the removal efficiency strongly depends on the initial inclusion concentration. It was also demonstrated that alumina inclusions are captured at the filter web-steel interface and inclusion floatation inside the mold cavity reduces the inclusion concentration in the casting.
