A price-based life cycle impact assessment method to quantify the reduced accessibility to mineral resources value

Fulvio Ardente et al.

Summary: This article presents a price-based life cycle impact assessment method to quantify the potential impact of dissipative uses of mineral resources. It defines an impact pathway from resource use to resource dissipation and subsequent damage to the safeguard subject for mineral resources. The method uses market prices as a proxy for the functions and values of mineral resources and provides coverage of elementary flows with good quality data.

Identification of dissipative emissions for improved assessment of metal resources in life cycle assessment

Mikolaj Owsianiak et al.

Summary: Environmental dissipation is a novel approach to account for impacts from mineral resources, focusing on emissions to the environment. It is important to differentiate truly dissipative emissions from anthropogenic releases that do not contribute to loss of accessibility of a given resource over time. This differentiation is crucial in metal resource impact assessment to highlight the need for considering dissipative emissions separately.

Comparative life cycle assessment of LFP and NCM batteries including the secondary use and different recycling technologies

Jiawei Quan et al.

Summary: This study used life cycle assessment (LCA) to quantify and compare the environmental impacts of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries and lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (NCM) batteries. The results showed that NCM batteries had better overall environmental performance but shorter service life. In China, the production phase had the greatest environmental impact, and recycling of waste batteries could help mitigate environmental burdens. Optimizing the charge discharge efficiency and increasing the use of clean energy were crucial in reducing the environmental impacts of batteries over their entire life cycle.

Midpoint and endpoint characterization factors for mineral resource dissipation: methods and application to 6000 data sets

Alexandre Charpentier Poncelet et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to reduce losses along the anthropogenic cycle of metals by quantifying dissipative flows of mineral resources and assessing their impacts in life cycle assessment. The researchers extended the coverage of previous impact assessment methods and evaluated their effectiveness compared to widely used methods. The results show that the updated methods enable distinguishing between different metals based on their global dissipation patterns and their market value.

Mineral resource dissipation in life cycle inventories

Antoine Beylot et al.

Summary: This article proposes an approach to account for mineral resource dissipation in life cycle inventories, with the application to analyze the direct dissipation of mineral resources along the primary production of copper. The results show that the production of 1 kg of copper cathode generates 0.88 kg of direct dissipative flows of resources, primarily calcium carbonate, copper, and to a lower extent iron. The developed approach may change the interpretation of results regarding mineral resources in LCA and have implications on methodological aspects and data requirements.

Life cycle impact assessment methods for estimating the impacts of dissipative flows of metals

Alexandre Charpentier Poncelet et al.

Summary: Metal dissipation can have potential environmental impacts and should be addressed in life cycle assessments. Two LCIA methods have been proposed to capture the dissipation patterns of metals based on dynamic material flow analysis data.

Summary: This paper discusses the accessibility of metals and minerals once they have entered the technosphere, identifying six human actions that compromise accessibility and proposing solutions to address resource (in)accessibility. Through a case study on cobalt in the EU, it demonstrates the current challenges and impacts of resource inaccessibility.
