Determinants of treatment outcomes in patients with multidrug-resistant TB

E. Burhan et al.

Summary: Different subsets of MDR-TB patients are at risk of poor outcomes at different times during treatment. Factors such as advanced age, diabetes, HIV co-infection, history of loss to follow-up, and low baseline body mass index can predict poor outcomes in MDR-TB patients.

Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis Treatment Outcome and Associated Factors at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital: A Ten-Year Retrospective Study

Teshome Belachew et al.

Summary: This study investigates the proportions and predictors of treatment outcomes among MDR/RR-TB patients and finds that nearly 23% of patients have unsuccessful treatment outcomes, with older age being significantly associated with treatment failure. It is recommended to strengthen combined treatment adherence interventions and evaluate treatment regimens and administration options to improve outcomes.

Clinical standards for the assessment, management and rehabilitation of post-TB lung disease

G. B. Migliori et al.

Summary: A set of five clinical standards has been established to assess and manage post TB lung disease (PTLD) and implement pulmonary rehabilitation (PR). The aim is to improve patient care and quality of life by guiding clinicians, programme managers, and public health officers in planning and implementing appropriate measures for PTLD.

Factors affecting outcome of longer regimen multidrug-resistant tuberculosis treatment in West Java Indonesia: A retrospective cohort study

Arto Yuwono Soeroto et al.

Summary: This study evaluated factors affecting success of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis treatment in patients using longer treatment regimen in West Java Indonesia. Age, gender, body mass index, tuberculosis treatment history, time of sputum conversion, acid fast bacilli sputum smear, HIV infection, chronic kidney disease, and cavitary lesion were identified as predictors for treatment outcome.

Determinant factors for loss to follow-up in drug-resistant tuberculosis patients: the importance of psycho-social and economic aspects

Soedarsono Soedarsono et al.

Summary: Factors such as sex, working status, income, and body mass index showed significant differences between treatment success and loss to follow-up DR-TB patients. Negative attitude towards treatment, limitation of social support, dissatisfaction with health service, and limitation of economic status were found to be correlated with increased loss to follow-up in DR-TB patients.

Effectiveness of Shorter Treatment Regimen in Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis Patients in Pakistan: A Multicenter Retrospective Record Review

Abudl Wahid et al.

Summary: The study showed that the shorter treatment regimen for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in Pakistan achieved a high treatment success rate, but a portion of patients experienced death or loss to follow-up. Factors such as age, weight, and previous tuberculosis treatment history were found to have an impact on treatment outcomes.

Predictors of mortality and loss to follow-up among drug resistant tuberculosis patients in Oromia Hospitals, Ethiopia: A retrospective follow-up study

Demelash Woldeyohannes et al.

Summary: The study found that drug-resistant tuberculosis mortality and LTF remain high in the study area, with chest radiographic findings and HIV serostatus being predictors of death, while drug adverse effects and culture test results were predictors of LTF. Continued support for TB/HIV service integration and identifying predictors may help reduce mortality and LTF in drug-resistant tuberculosis patients.

High success and low recurrence with shorter treatment regimen for multidrug-resistant TB in Nepal

S. Koirala et al.

Summary: The study assessed the uptake, effectiveness, and safety of the 9-12-month STR in MDR/RR-TB patients in Nepal. Results showed modest uptake of STR, high treatment success, and low post-treatment recurrence, with HIV positivity and patient age over 55 being significantly associated with unsuccessful outcomes.

Undernutrition and Treatment Success in Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis in Uganda

Joseph Baruch Baluku et al.

Summary: This study in Uganda found that most people with drug-resistant tuberculosis (DRTB) had severe undernutrition, and factors such as smoking and anaemia were associated with lower odds of treatment success. Further evaluation is needed to understand the impact of urban residence on treatment success.

Summary: Drug-resistant tuberculosis patients in Guinea have a high prevalence of malnutrition at 64.7%, with factors such as unsuccessful treatment, active presence of mycobacterium tuberculosis, and abnormal liver function being associated with malnutrition. Implementing specific interventions for high-risk patients, including nutritional supplementation, psychosocial support, and tuberculosis treatment, can improve management for better treatment outcomes.
