Organophosphate (OP) diesters and a review of sources, chemical properties, environmental occurrence, adverse effects, and future directions

Yaxin Liu et al.

Summary: The demand for organophosphate esters (OPEs) has increased in the global flame retardant market due to the phase-out of toxic halogenated flame retardants. OP diesters, as degradation products of OP triesters, have been identified as potential risks to biota and humans in the environment. Scientific literature has shown the wide occurrence of OP diesters in various environmental matrices and the adverse effects on exposed organisms, leading to the need for further research in this field.

Gridded emission inventory of organophosphorus flame retardants in China and inventory validation

Jian He et al.

Summary: The study highlights China's significant role in global production and emission of OPFRs, with emissions increasing over the years. Higher emissions were identified in specific regions such as Jiangxi, Shandong, BTH, YRD, and PRD, with East China experiencing more intense contamination. The developed emission inventory was deemed reliable based on model-data comparisons.

Interlaboratory comparison investigations (ICIs) and external quality assurance schemes (EQUASs) for flame retardant analysis in biological matrices: Results from the HBM4EU project

Darina Dvorakova et al.

Summary: The European Human Biomonitoring Initiative has conducted quality assurance and control schemes to evaluate the analytical comparability and accuracy of laboratories analyzing flame retardants in serum and urine. Results from four rounds from 2018 to 2020 showed varying levels of success among participating laboratories, with a core network found for certain HFRs but critical gaps in capacity for others. The evaluation highlighted the need for improvement in analytical capabilities, particularly for certain chemicals and biomarkers.

The European human biomonitoring platform- Design and implementation of a laboratory quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) programme for selected priority chemicals

Marta Esteban Lopez et al.

Summary: The HBM4EU initiative aims to obtain comparable and robust exposure data for a variety of prioritized chemicals in human samples. The QA/QC programme designed for this purpose involves two different approaches for different sets of chemicals, helping identify laboratories capable of generating consistent and comparable results for sample analysis. This programme serves as the first step towards establishing a sustainable European network of HBM laboratories.

The European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU): Human biomonitoring guidance values for selected phthalates and a substitute plasticizer

Rosa Lange et al.

Summary: The widespread internal exposure of the European population to plasticizers has sparked the urgent need for toxicological interpretation. The European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU) has significantly contributed to understanding actual exposure levels and their impact on health. Human biomonitoring guidance values (HBM-GVs) have been derived for various phthalates and a non-phthalate substitute, aiding in health risk assessment.

Sorption and migration of organophosphate flame retardants between sources and settled dust

Xiaoyu Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the emission, sorption, and migration of organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) from different sources to settled dust. It was found that dust with lower organic content and smaller size tended to absorb more OPFRs, but different types of dust did not significantly affect OPFRs emission into chamber air from the same source. The partitioning between dust-air favored less volatile OPFRs, while emission from sources favored volatile chemicals.

Endocrine disrupting potential of replacement flame retardants-Review of current knowledge for nuclear receptors associated with reproductive outcomes

Lola Bajard et al.

Summary: This review identified gaps in data on the endocrine disrupting potential of many replacement flame retardants, calling for further evaluation and potential regulation of these chemicals. It also highlighted potential endocrine disrupting chemicals associated with reproductive outcomes among these emerging chemicals, raising concerns for mixture effects as the population is co-exposed to several flame retardants and other chemicals.
