Research progress on the self-ignition of high-pressure hydrogen discharge: A review

Shangyong Zhou et al.

Summary: Hydrogen energy, as a promising substitute for fossil energy, has witnessed significant development in recent years. However, safety issues regarding hydrogen limit its large-scale application. Research has shown that the minimum discharge pressure for hydrogen self-ignition is approximately 2 MPa, and factors such as discharge tube shape and bursting disc rupture significantly affect the characteristics of hydrogen self-ignition. Furthermore, the study of hydrogen self-ignition mechanism under special working conditions has been expanded through shock-induced ignition theory.

Modeling of turbulent deflagration behaviors of premixed hydrogen-air in closed space with obstacles

Zhonghua Sheng et al.

Summary: The study investigates the propagation of premixed hydrogen-air deflagration flames in a closed duct with different shapes of obstacles using large eddy simulation (LES). The turbulent flame wrinkling factor in the LES subgrid turbulent combustion model is dynamically modeled, and the results obtained accurately match the experimental data. The research reveals that the triangular obstacle induces a higher peak overpressure compared to the square and circular obstacles, and the vortex at the tail of the obstacle is the main inducing factor for the formation of juxtaposed tulip flames. The study also observes the transition of the deflagration flame from a wrinkled flame to a thin reaction zone and quantifies the level of turbulence-flame interaction using the Karlovitz number. The findings provide critical information for safety planning and explosion protection.

Summary: The study proposed physical and mathematical models describing detonation processes in hydrogen-air mixture, based on detailed and reduced kinetics models in one- and two-dimensional formulation. It calculated the interaction of detonation waves with inert particles and revealed types of detonation flows in gas suspension, obtaining volume concentrations and particle diameters causing detonation wave failure. Comparison between one-dimensional and two-dimensional approaches showed quantitative similarity in detonation wave velocity and values causing detonation failure.

On the explosion characteristics for central and end-wall ignition in hydrogen-air mixtures: A comparative study

Summary: The experimental results demonstrate that central ignition is generally more hazardous than end-wall ignition, especially under quiescent conditions and lower initial pressure. Central ignition results in small energy loss and behaves similarly to an ideal constant volume explosion, while end-wall ignition consumes a large amount of explosive energy. Under turbulent conditions, the increase in jet pressure and jet time intensifies the explosion hazard of central ignition but restricts the explosion process of end-wall ignition.
