Biohydrogen production by novel cyanobacterial strains isolated from rice paddies in Kazakhstan

Bekzhan D. Kossalbayev et al.

Summary: The limited supply of oil has led to the exploration of alternative energy sources, with hydrogen gas emerging as a promising option. A wild strain of cyanobacteria isolated from rice paddies in Kazakhstan has shown high hydrogen production potential. Among the strains studied, Synechocystis sp. S-1 exhibited the highest hydrogen production rate under light conditions, while the wild-type cyanobacterium Anabaena variabilis A-1 had a higher hydrogen production rate in the dark.

Strategies and economic feasibilities in cyanobacterial hydrogen production

Gulzhanay K. Kamshybayeva et al.

Summary: Cyanobacteria are potential producers of economically viable hydrogen energy, but the current amount of hydrogen obtained is limited. To produce large amounts of cyanobacterial hydrogen, the most active wild-type strains need to be selected and technological, modular, and genetic research must be conducted simultaneously. The low energy efficiency of cyanobacterial hydrogen also requires comprehensive research.

Prospects of cyanobacterial pigment production: Biotechnological potential and optimization strategies

Sandugash K. Sandybayeva et al.

Summary: Growing awareness of the harm caused by synthetic colorants has led to a preference for natural alternatives such as plant or microbial pigments. Cyanobacteria are a valuable source of natural biopigments, with bio-based pigments being sold as extracts to reduce costs. Various methods are used for pigment extraction, and continuous cultivation systems are considered the most suitable for large-scale production. However, high installation and operation costs limit the large-scale production of cyanobacterial pigments.

Lignite biosolubilization and bioconversion by Bacillus sp.: the collation of analytical data

Nuraly Akimbekov et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the significant metabolic potential of Bacillus sp. in solubilizing lignite and forming various soluble organic substances, which are characterized by their lower molecular weight and aromaticity. XRD and SEM analyses provide insights into the mineralogical and microscopic changes during lignite biosolubilization. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of microbe-mineral interactions in the coal environment, enhancing knowledge on sustainable production of humic substances.

Diazotrophs for Lowering Nitrogen Pollution Crises: Looking Deep Into the Roots

Asma Imran et al.

Summary: The excessive use of nitrogen in agriculture has had significant impacts on the environment and ecosystem, requiring global efforts to address the nitrogen-polluted planet Earth. Diazotrophic bacteria, as natural nitrogen sources for plants, have the potential to improve plant nitrogen use efficiency. The application of nanotechnology has revolutionized agriculture, and integrating slow-releasing nano-fertilizers with diazotrophs can effectively reduce nitrogen inputs, minimizing nitrogen pollution and losses.
