Response surface optimization of microalgae microbial fuel cell (MMFC) enhanced by yeast immobilization for bioelectricity production

H. Hadiyanto et al.

Summary: In this study, suspended and immobilized Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast in alginate were used as a biocatalyst to optimize the operating conditions of microalgae microbial fuel cell (MMFC) with different concentrations of tofu wastewater. The results showed that immobilized yeast performed better in producing stable electrical output and removing COD compared to suspended yeast. Therefore, the model using immobilized yeast at a concentration of 10.89% w/v and wastewater concentration of 56.94% achieved the best power density and COD removal efficiency.

Fuel cells for carbon capture applications

Mohammad Ali Abdelkareem et al.

Summary: The harmful effect of carbon pollution leads to depletion of the ozone layer, and while progress is being made in developing different carbon dioxide capturing methods, they are still expensive and face technical challenges. Fuel cells are seen as an effective method for CO2 capturing and/or conversion, with solid oxide fuel cells, molten carbonate fuel cells, and microbial fuel cells showing promising results in this regard. High-temperature fuel cells such as SOFCs and MCFCs are effectively used for CO2 capturing, while algae-based microbial fuel cells capture and convert carbon dioxide through photosynthesis.
