State-of-art modifications of heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 methanation - Active sites, surface basicity and oxygen defects

Xingyuan Gao et al.

Summary: This paper discusses three major modification strategies for improving CO2 methanation catalysts, including active sites, surface basicity, and oxygen defects. Smaller size and higher dispersion of metallic sites enhance adsorption of H2 and CO2 for a higher yield of CH4; while basic sites promote crucial intermediate formation, acidic sites may adversely affect CH4 production; and oxygen defects increase CO2 adsorption and oxygen mobility.

Mechanistic insight into the electron-donation effect of modified ZIF-8 on Ru for CO2 hydrogenation to formic acid

Xiaowei Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electron-donating effect of supports on active metals for CO2 hydrogenation to formic acid using theoretical calculations. The researchers prepared a catalyst by anchoring RuCl3 on a post-synthetic modified zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) containing linkers with uncoordinated N sites. They found that the uncoordinated N sites donate extra electron density to Ru, resulting in a decreased energy barrier for CO2 activation. The catalyst with the highest number of Mtz ligands displayed the best catalytic performance.

Understanding kinetically interplaying reverse water-gas shift and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis during CO2 hydrogenation over Fe-based catalysts

Minjie Xu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the interaction between Reverse Water-Gas Shift (RWGS) and Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) during CO2 hydrogenation using Na-Fe5C2 catalysts. The study found that Na-Fe5C2 catalysts are enriched with FeOx sites, which facilitate RWGS reaction, but the CO2 conversion is limited by the subsequent FTS step due to a lack of available FeCx sites. The performance of the catalyst is controlled by the properties and relative quantities of the two different active sites.

Effect of support and reduction temperature in the hydrogenation of CO2 over the Cu-Pd bimetallic catalyst with high Cu/Pd ratio

Yamei Xu et al.

Summary: Metal-support interaction and catalyst pretreatment play a crucial role in industrial catalysis. This study investigated the effect of different supports (SiO2, CeO2, TiO2, and ZrO2) on a Cu-Pd catalyst with a high Cu/Pd ratio, and compared the reduction temperatures of 350°C and 550°C. The results showed that the reduction temperature significantly influenced the surface reconstruction and phase transition of the catalyst, and led to variations in catalytic performance. Among the investigated catalysts, Zr-350 exhibited the highest methanol yield.

CO2 hydrogenation to olefins on supported iron catalysts: Effects of support properties on carbon-containing species and product distribution

Yangyang Liu et al.

Summary: Investigation of different supports on the structure and catalytic performance of iron catalysts shows that ZrO2 supported catalysts are more beneficial for olefin selectivity and chain growth. The support regulates the composition of the iron oxide and iron carbide phases, leading to the formation of the highest content of Fe5C2 on the catalyst surface and inhibiting the hydrogenation of olefins.

Insight into the role of Fe5C2 in CO2 catalytic hydrogenation to hydrocarbons

Junhui Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between the Fe phase, catalytic performance, and reaction pathways by preparing and using Fe5C2 and K-modified Fe5C2. Results showed that Fe5C2 exhibited high selectivities for CH4 and CO during CO2 conversion, while the addition of K increased selectivity for C-2-C-4 hydrocarbons and C5+ hydrocarbons. This work provides insights into the direct CO2 hydrogenation over Fe5C2 and Fe3O4-Fe5C2 catalysts, advancing the understanding of active phases and reaction pathways of CO2 hydrogenation over iron-based catalysts.

Revealing the activity of different iron carbides for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis

Fangxu Lu et al.

Summary: Research on iron-based catalysts doped with SiO2 or Al2O3 has shown that adjusting the formation of iron carbides can enhance the activity of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reactions. Characterization results using techniques such as XPS and CO-DRIFTS revealed that SiO2 or Al2O3 affects the electronic state of iron atoms and promotes the formation of Fe-Si or Fe-Al interactions on the surface of iron powder, which in turn plays a key role in the formation of the active phase ε-Fe2C. The content of ε-Fe2C is found to be more beneficial to activity compared to the traditionally recognized active phase χ-Fe5C2 in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reactions.
