Bacteriophage-encoded enzymes destroying bacterial cell membranes and walls, and their potential use as antimicrobial agents

Lukasz Grabowski et al.

Summary: The emergence of pathogenic bacteria resistant to most, if not all, known antibiotics is a significant medical issue. Developing novel antibacterial therapies, such as using bacteriophage-encoded enzymes, is crucial for future efficient treatment of bacterial infections. Understanding the biological functions and properties of these enzymes is essential for their potential use as antibacterial agents.

Development of new strategy combining heat treatment and phage cocktail for post-contamination prevention

Haejoon Park et al.

Summary: The study proposes a novel strategy combining thermostable bacteriophages with thermal processing of food production plants to control foodborne pathogens and bacterial contamination. By optimizing bacteriophage cocktail components and verifying the antibacterial strategy in model systems, it was found that thermostable phages significantly reduced the number of post-contaminated Salmonella.

WbaP is required for swarm motility and intramacrophage multiplication of Salmonella Enteritidis spiC mutant by glucose use ability

Yaonan Wang et al.

Summary: The research identified that the Salmonella Enteritidis spiC mutant had enhanced swarming motility and intramacrophage hyperproliferation, which was linked to glucose metabolism. This study also revealed the importance of the Wbap enzyme in glucose metabolism and LPS synthesis, shedding light on the mechanisms behind intracellular Salmonella replication.

(p)ppGpp synthetases are required for the pathogenicity of Salmonella Pullorum in chickens

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: A mutant lacking (p)ppGpp synthetases in Salmonella Pullorum showed reduced ability to form biofilms and resistance to environmental stresses, as well as decreased internalization into host cells and colonization abilities in young chickens. RNA sequencing revealed that (p)ppGpp synthetases not only affected the stringent response, but also controlled the expression of virulence factors, indicating their importance for the pathogenicity of S. Pullorum.
