Direct and Converse Flexoelectricity in Two-Dimensional Materials

Matteo Springolo et al.

Summary: In this paper, we calculate the flexoelectric response of 2D materials fully from first principles, and identify two distinct contributions of purely electronic and lattice-mediated nature. We determine a key metric term within the former, consisting of the quadrupolar moment of the unperturbed charge density, and propose a simple continuum model to connect our findings with experimental measurements of the converse flexoelectric effect.

Flexoelectric effect in boron nitride-graphene heterostructures

S. Kundalwal et al.

Summary: The flexoelectric coefficients and bending stiffness of boron nitride-graphene heterostructures were studied using molecular dynamics simulations and continuum mechanics approach, showing that performance enhancement is more significant when the symmetry of the heterostructures is broken by the graphene domain.

Flexoelectricity in metals

A. S. Yurkov et al.

Summary: Flexoelectricity is an electromechanical phenomenon present in any material, with the largest response observed in ferroelectrics. A simple theoretical model for flexoelectricity in metals has been provided, with estimates for aluminum and guidelines for experimental detection formulated. The magnitude of the flexoelectric effect in metals is comparable to that in high-k dielectrics, making metals suitable for applications in flexoelectric sensing and energy harvesting. Furthermore, flexoelectricity in metals may be easier to interpret as it is predicted to be free of surface contributions.

Enhancing flexoelectricity in PEDOT:PSS polymer films with soft treatments

M. Saadeh et al.

Summary: Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) was utilized as a transducing material for mechanical-to-electrical conversion devices based on the flexoelectric-like response of the polymer. The addition of xylitol and post-treatment with ethanol and methanol significantly improved the flexoelectric coefficient, particularly when combined with a gold top electrode.
