Effect of natural gas energy fractions on combustion performance and emission characteristics in an optical CI engine fueled with natural gas/diesel dual-fuel

Zhaojun Zhu et al.

Summary: Increasing the natural gas energy fraction (NGEF) delays the start of combustion and decreases peak pressure; NGEF significantly affects the distribution of the ignition kernel, with higher NGEF scattering the ignition kernel; Lower soot volume fraction and unburned hydrocarbon emissions can be obtained by increasing NGEF from 0% to 70%, but further increasing NGEF to 85% deteriorates combustion.

Experimental and numerical investigation of the ignition process in a large bore dual fuel engine

Federico Millo et al.

Summary: Dual fuel engines are attractive solutions in the marine and power generation sectors, but stricter emissions regulations and market demands are requiring shorter engine development times. Reliable combustion models can help reduce testing activities, but simulating dual-fuel combustion is challenging due to chemical interactions and mode transitions.

Demystifying the lifecycle environmental benefits and harms of LNG as marine fuel

Hayoung Jang et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between LNG and environmental impacts in shipping activities and introduced a parametric trend lifecycle assessment method. Results showed that different types of LNG engines have varying environmental strengths and limitations, with the first engine type proving more effective compared to diesel fuel. Additionally, it was found that the operational phase contributes significantly more to global warming effects and local pollutants compared to the production phase.

Development of a reduced multi-component combustion mechanism for a diesel/natural gas dual fuel engine by cross-reaction analysis

Zhenting Liu et al.

Summary: In this paper, a four-component reduced mechanism was proposed for predicting combustion characteristics and emissions from natural gas-diesel dual fuel engines. The validation of the reduced mechanism showed good performance under different reaction conditions. The effects of cross-reactions on ignition were more pronounced in medium and low temperatures, but not significant at high temperatures.
